Too many feelings to film. So here’s my take in writing.

I’ve finally sold @wearefaace. Thank you to everyone who has supported me along the way, in every possible way.

I shouldn’t have got my skincare brand stocked in @lookfantastic and @harrods…

A sentence I never thought I’d write, but here we are.

When I launched Faace, my retail “strategy” was basically saying yes to everything. Every opportunity, retailer and market. Exciting? Yes. Commercially smart? Not really.

Because getting into the retailer isn’t the hardest part - staying there is.

In my most recent Failings of a Female Founder, I’m talking about saying yes too quickly, getting distracted by validation, and what I’d do differently now.

So, what does it really cost to create a brand? 💸 And for once I’m not talking about the emotional cost.

From packaging to PR, I break down the true investment behind launching a beauty business - numbers included. Spoiler: it’s more than you think (& these are the minimums).

Can any beauty product ever be a truly original idea?

I spoke to @cosmeticsbusiness about the Fenty Skin, Glow Recipe and Huda Beauty eye patch packaging ‘K-drama’.

We discussed if we’re actually seeing more brands copying each other. Or just seeing more brands arrive at the same ideas at the same time…

Here’s my take:

There are more brands and launches than ever.

And a lot of those brands are probably looking at the same trends and trade shows, working with the same labs and targeting the same consumers.

So when similar products launch, I don’t think it automatically means one copied the other. It could just be these businesses are looking in the same direction.

I also think we also need to be realistic about how many beauty products are truly one offs.

For me, it’s about more than product alone. It’s about how those businesses show up to connect with their consumer.

The brands that stand out and have staying power won’t necessarily be the ones launching the most products or the biggest innovations, but the ones creating something useful, inspiring, efficacious or genuinely meaningful.

What do you think, is there still such a thing as a truly original beauty product?

Ok maybe I look like I’ve got it all together (maybe not).

Social media in general can make everything look shiny.

And as much as I’m a big believer in cheerleading ourselves, I also think there’s room to be honest about where were don't always feel at our best.

So here are some of my flops as a founder...

Happy birthday @danrowland09! Not many people could work with their husbands. But I genuinely like spending all my time with you and that’s because I love everything about you. Except when you’re very drunk or we’re (I’m) running late - then you’re quite annoying.

What would you do differently if you could have your time again?

It’s one of my favourite questions to ask successful people. Because nobody gets everything right first time. We act, learn, pivot and grow.

I spoke to @hollyvictoriabrooke co-founder of @weare.regular about this for my @substack. Her biggest lesson?

Learn to filter the noise.

Especially as a woman building a business, when suddenly everyone has an opinion on what you should be doing.

When Holly and her equally dreamy co-founder @joelygabrielle launched people wanted them to change the formula, but they held their nerve. That formulation has now sold 200,000 poo sticks. 💩

Holly says “Take advice, absolutely, but treat it as data, not instruction.” Honestly, I love this.

There’s so much noise when you’re building a business. Learning who to listen to - and who not to - might be one of the most valuable skills of all.

My conversation with Holly is now live.
