Cover Drop for our September issue with Sonna Rele. 📸

A singer walks onto the stage. The coaches have their backs turned. Nobody knows what is about to happen.

Then one chair turned. Then another two.

What viewers saw was a brilliant vocalist taking on Mariah Carey’s My All. What they could not see was that @sonnarele had been forced to step away from performing entirely, after being diagnosed with a rare inner ear condition that amplified sound around ten times. She could hear her own heartbeat, her eye movements, conversations through walls. Brain surgery was on the table.

She spent three months working with sound and frequencies, and found her way back to the stage.

That journey now shapes the music itself. Her new upcoming single I Am is an affirmation song about healing and self love. “I feel like we’re all on a healing journey. We all need love, light and positivity in this kind of world that we’re trying to navigate.”

She has sung for Disney, worked with Ne-Yo, performed at Wembley holding both the British and Indian flags, and is now through to the next round with Team will.i.am, alongside a judging role on Britain’s Next Superstar.

Her one regret about the early years? “I think I would have had more fun. The most powerful place you can ever be is right here, right now.”

Or as her mum @umarele puts it, and Sonna quotes her often: get out of your head and into your heart. 🤍
