The Veil

What does it mean when we say “the veil is thin”?

Why do we imagine the physical and spiritual worlds as being separated by a veil, a piece of cloth between what we can see and what we cannot?

Can a textile become a portal to the spiritual?
Can we infuse the essence and vibration of plants into cloth?

We already surround ourselves with objects of protection. We carry crystals, mojo bags, momentos, talismans, and religious items as a way of protecting ourselves, our families, and our spaces.

But what if there was another way to wear your protection?

Around the Spring Equinox, I began thinking about this and felt called to work with roses. I wanted to explore what it might mean to capture their essence and vibration in cloth and wear it as another form of protection.

I went into the studio and made a silk bandana using roses of different colors. I wore it that weekend, and it felt as if a little magic had been performed. Everything seemed smoother, more synchronized, more uplifted. I felt great, and somehow, great things seemed to happen around me too.

It got me thinking about our clothes and the things we choose to place directly on our bodies. What if what we wear can hold intention? What if our clothing can become another vessel for protection, connection, and ritual?

That question became the foundation for the "Spiritual Veil".

Working with roses, marigolds, yarrow, mugwort, rosemary, and other botanicals, we create our own personal veil. A textile infused with the essence, symbolism, and spiritual resonance of the plants we work with.

Capturing the warmth and color of summer as winter medicine 💛

I’ve been dyeing with cempasúchil, also known as Mexican, Aztec or African marigold (Tagetes erecta) intentionally for the last couple of weeks as we are in its harvest season from August through October here in the northeast. I’ve seen an array of results depending on type of fiber, potency of dye, and a few other factors -a robust mordanting process is key.

I’ve called this “cempa dye study”. It’s been so fun to be in this playful and creative place this summer post a major period of burnout and what I call “head-work”. Intentionally carving out time and working through moving the energy downward towards my hands helps me to return to the present, feel my creative power and ability to world build.

Flowers were saved from previous seasons, gifted to me post ofrenda and día de muertos commemorations or fresh and then dried from gardens in the city or from this local patch I came across uptown 🙌🏽. I’ve been guided in this process as I deepened this learning by @nelisenasheida and @f.a.v.io.l.a who are genius textile artists and first by Cayla from @morninggloryinthebronx from whom and from where I learned incredibly much for many years about dyes, herbs, mutual aid, food production and more. I owe so much to community gardens and gardeners in this city who have shared in on their knowledge and experience throughout so much of young adult life.

With that, I’d love to continue to share what I have learned and will have a few opportunities available soon for communal play and exploration. Keep an eye out if it’s of interest 🐝

Que la abundancia del verano nos ayude a recordar de la abundancia que puede llegar a existir en el pensar, en el sentir y en el actuar. En la expansión y posibilidad 🌀

Eso si, no a la escacez! Hay más que suficiente para todos, o no?

We had the great privilege of meeting Tania @saparawomendream -of the Sápara Nation from the Amazon region in what is now Ecuador, a few weeks back. If you got around to seeing or even adquiring her work, there was so much weaved magic in all of her and her communities’ art / artesanías. I think is important to stay curious about the origin and stories behind what we consume so we break away from the very capitalistic MO that becomes simply about the monetary exchange. When we get to know about the hands, the materials and the stories, we learn (both feel and perceive) the relationship to a place and territory the artist and community has. This is relationship building, when we make human by slowing down and being curious, humble and in gratitude. If we have the opportunity to engage in this consensually, we then have the responsibility to hold the people, the stories and knowledge honorably.

I love plants so much and I love people and their long history of communing and tending and creating with them: for food, as medicine, natural materials to build and weave and clothe and to dye and adorn and make everything even more beautiful.

The following was the printout/resource I created to support Tania’s weaving workshop, looking more closely at the fiber used, it’s harvesting, processing and of course, the dyes.

The fiber used comes from the Chambira palm (Astrocaryum chambira) native to Amazon rainforest. The dyes used are turmeric (Curcuma longa) that create that glorious golden yellow, alongside the Chonta palm (Bactris gasipaes) - we eat its fruit! This one gives you that faded green color. Other colors came from different barks and we could not match their indigenous name to their Spanish or English counterpart -so that is pending until next time :)

Thank you @mercadoandine x @besodecolibri for co-creating this space! Thank you to @saparawomendream for sharing with us all and allowing us the opportunity to sit and learn 💛 To @pri.aguilr for grilling our 🌽 @munayki3 for holding it down and all participants for sticking around amidst the few setbacks we experienced ⛈️😅 by @jasduran

🦜Thank you Tania (@saparawomendream) for teaching us how to weave with chambira! We were initially delayed by rain but the students were determined to learn from you. Thank you for lovingly sharing your knowledge with us. We hope to see you again soon! 🍃 a special thank you to Jasmin who helped us redirect from the outdoor space we had originally planned our workshop at to a nearby indoor space. Jasmin’s kindness and fast thinking guided us through the storm.

Today is my half birthday and to honor it I want to uplift and celebrate my brilliant friends and chosen siblings, those that have walked alongside me for many, many moons and for years to come. Across state lines, and at times even across countries, sharing resources, strategies, reflecting and mirroring truth, sitting with each others’ pain and loss and celebrating the other through our big milestones. Listening, rooting and witnessing all the messy parts of life and of the self without judgement.

Together this group can (and will): grow food and medicine, build sustainable structures to do life within and outside of, educate youth, support mamas and mamas-to-be, support end-of-life journeys, keep our bodies in movement and in wellness, keep us grounded in cultura, ancestral memory and ceremony, among so much more. We’ll create art, offer all kinds of craft and medicine workshops to empower all of us to do life, together -and to be creative in doing so.

To the dreamiest bunch, I love you all, thank you for seeing me and doing life with me. Thank you for taping my shoe back together so I can walk 👠🥹 by @jasduran
