My first visit to the Wapta Icefield in summer was blessed with great weather, a gaggle of participants eager to learn the basics of mountaineering and a rad instructor whose enthusiasm and knowledge I will emulate (Darek Glowacki). Thanks to @alpineclubcan for providing me with the opportunity to gain work experience as an Apprentice Alpine Guide. by @jasmincaton

I had the immense privilege of spending four days in the Bugs teaching a custom mountaineering course to a wonderful family from Nelson @yanntroutet . We covered the basics, climbed a few classics and thoroughly enjoyed where we were and who we were with. I loved the feeling of empowering the next generation of women to explore the mountains with skills, confidence and a healthy dose of respect for the hazards out there. This was truly living my dream! 😎 by @jasmincaton

5 years of making memories with the one and only @mathieulebail. It takes balls (or ovaries) to go on a date with a lady with 2 year old twins and it takes a huge heart to stick it out. Supporting our community is a core value of VMT, and we believe that helping youth feel seen and encouraged as they embark into the adventure of adult life is a worthy avenue to show our support.

With this in mind we created the Valhalla Mountain Touring Outdoor Adventure Award.

This $1500 award is presented to a student from the New Denver graduating class who shows interest in outdoor adventures or the environment, and is intended to support their next chapter of an adventurous life of their choosing.

We would like to extend a heartfelt congratulations to Ezekiel Schwartz @e_schwartz9 for being this year’s recipient of the award.

Ezekiel grew up in New Denver, shreds impressively on a board and mountain bike and has a local job building mountain bike trails this summer. Longer term he is planning to become a forest fire fighter so he can continue to pursue his snowboard dreams in the winter while protecting our forests in the summer.

When we asked Ezekiel what he has loved most about growing up in the Slocan Valley, he mentioned the mountains and terrain, the recreation community and culture, and the knowledgeable mentors he has learned from. We couldn’t agree more! taken in Valhalla Mountain Touring Ltd by @jasmincaton

I spent the first week of May on the @icefalllodge Traverse, visiting all five of the huts in the vicinity of the Lyell Icefield. Instead of leading clients, I was being guided by candidates taking the final exam for the ACMG Ski Guide certification.

The photos capture some of the expected highlights of a trip in terrain like this: spectacular ice caves, skiing classic summits, and mostly excellent travel conditions, with a bit of valley bottom slugging to build character and expand the guide’s toolbox.

For me the real highlights happened outside the photos: belly-shaking laughter, the camaraderie that emerges when good people take on a challenging adventure together, and the opportunity to witness the learning and growth of a new generation of ski guides. taken in Icefall Lodge by @jasmincaton
