The sweater I’ve long dreamed of! Some may say silly timing as it’s almost summer, but I say I’ve now got me the coziest thing for cool mornings and nights outside! 🤠

This was ~the~ sweater I envisioned when I started knitting (this and a traditional Irish Aran sweater that I am nowhere near ready to attempt!). It will be beloved and cherished.

Making garments is an incredibly fulfilling yet humbling practice for me. It’s the world I always loved and wanted to be in. If you let it, making something with your hands can be deeply healing, which is sometimes uncomfortable. It forces me to face parts of myself like my perfectionism or to be real with my intentions or to remind myself to slow down and take in the process. It’s hard for me to ignore these very real aspects of making. I feel like I’m in constant reflection mode. It’s not just about the finished object, even if it looks it.

🌟 Pattern is #winterspullover by @ozetta with some length and ribbing modifications all around.

🧶 Yarn is the most beautiful @eisaku_noro @noroyarns Haunui in #4/Mackenzie Basin that I’ve had my eyes on for a while. The details in this undyed (!!!) yarn are just amazing, I could talk about it for days.

My greatest source of inspiration is nature. And my next greatest source of inspiration is others who are inspired by nature.

@handmade.with.lauren just released her pattern for the Panorama Sweater — a beautiful cabled pattern inspired by the panoramas of British Columbia. It is a really special design and it was an honour to test it, especially as my first cabled project! 🏔️🌲🌊

Details 🌟 Panorama Sweater by @handmade.with.lauren with @briggslittle Heritage in Navy Blue from @fiafiayarns and @wooltrends709. A Canadian project through and through, and I just really love that.

This is Lauren’s first pattern release and if it is any indication of where her designs are headed, we are all in for a treat. 💙

My spring update is:

1. I am still mourning the ending of Outlander (cries).

2. The garden has not yet been tended to (oops).

3. It has been a wonderful few weeks absolutely loving my #mandisweater. It was such a joy to test knit this for @knittersandfriends. It’s a beautiful pattern and it’s out now! And it’s a lighter weight sweater which is perfect for cooler spring days (I’ve worn it so much already!) and summer nights. Big win in my books! 🌟

This rusty red is reminding me of cardinals, bricks, warmth, blood and all the life spring brings. 🩸

I’m trying to practice fixing things I don’t like about the things I’ve made. I knew the minute I finished the collar on this cardigan that I didn’t like it. That was in November and while I only got around to it now, I’m so glad I did. I may even do it again! Arguably, this is the best part about crafting slowly. Being able to come back to it again and again until you love it enough to wear it forever.

My wool does not go away when winter does. I need it year round. And knits aside, my other favourite wool thing is this very special sheepskin pouch made by @thesoftfolk. ❣️

Taylor makes these bags with so much love and her devoted hands. They’re more than just a “bag.” They are truly one of a kind and so sweet. I’ve witnessed how much care and intention goes into each one. I’ve also witnessed countless people stopping us on the streets asking for details about them. They’re just so good.

@thesoftfolk JUST launched a website with limited stock of bags like this and others, so if you’re lucky and any are left (I think there’s one), run so you can bask in the glory that is having something incredibly beautiful, functional and handmade that makes use out of a byproduct that often gets thrown away (…YES). There is also a limited stock of yarn from her sheep (yes, I have knit with it and yes, it is wonderful) and the cutest stitch markers. And even if you don’t purchase anything off the site right now, go take a look because it’s so lovely!

Taking over my mind as of late is grappling with being an “I could make that myself” person and how it’s both a blessing and a curse.

“As with anything in life, there’s a give and take. Reciprocity. I get to choose the crafts and skills I want to learn and it’s a decision I bear great responsibility in, knowing I can continue to also make investments in others who are devoting their lives to the craft they also bear great responsibility in. If we aren’t experiencing the expressions of love, joy and beauty of others, we live in silos. We lack community. We lack reciprocity and sharing. We miss out on a life rich with the creations and devotion of others. That’s what has happened. That’s the world far too many of us exist in now.“

The full essay is on Substack, linked in my profile.

Definitely listened to the Outlander soundtrack while making this but this is the song stuck in my head right now. 🤠

Most days I do pretend I’m with my 17th century fairy ancestors in the Scottish Highlands and when my brother brought me the most beautiful rustic Aran yarn from Ireland, I knew I needed to make something in honour of that vision. 🌟

An inspiration photo of a shrug/capelet I had saved on Pinterest was what I decided to make. I hadn’t previously found a pattern for it, so I was going to wing it and try to self-draft something. My gut told me to check one more time that there wasn’t a pattern I could use as a starting point. Imagine my utter shock when I got not only a pattern to use as a starting point, but also THE pattern modeled after the exact same inspiration photo I had saved. A very happy ending for me thanks to @stitching_stone! ❣️

It was -20C when I filmed this. I was cold, but not as cold as you’d think and that’s Canadian wool for ya. 🌬️

This is the #StapleSweater by @knitwork___ which came out a few days ago! It’s a beautiful pattern and was such a joy to knit. Aptly named as it has very quickly become a staple for me, even in such a wacky colour that honestly is a bit outside of my comfort zone. I just could not get this colour out of my head over the past year and it needed to happen. And I’m thinking about it more now—it’s the perfect colour to brighten up the dark winter days. And with the extreme cold arriving this week, I’ve been wearing this almost daily. 💚

Congratulations on another wonderful pattern, Jesika, and thanks for letting me test it!

Embodying slow craft in a rushed world ~ I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and found some words to articulate my thoughts and feelings. ❣️🐑❄️🧶🕯️🪡

We devoted crafters are not immune to a culture of influence, take and scarcity, even if our chosen crafts inherently invite us to slow down and use our hands.

How do we encourage healthy boundaries with our craft? How do we maintain and remember the magic in our craft without it getting swiftly washed away by the force of “rush”? I find myself pondering these questions and now I pose them to you.

The fact is that many of the crafts we are practicing and holding out to preserve—like wood-working, basketmaking, knitting, quilting, leatherwork, weaving, sewing and so much more—were not created for the modern world. And as modern people, what I observe is that we seem a bit lost in how these old crafts and our lifestyles now can coexist because they couldn’t be more opposite. But I think we can get there. I think some people are doing it.

Our creativity and sharing is what saves us from the noise in our world. It’s storytelling. What if we started looking at each other’s creations as such?

I don’t have all the answers, maybe none at all. But it feels important to discuss the responsibility we bear in our crafts. I wholeheartedly believe we are responsible for the world we are living in and creating for our future; that applies here too.

Thanks for reading and pondering with me. There is more of this in a (very long) Substack post via my profile 🔗. 💌

This video is from last winter at @forgetmenotflowersandcafe, which feels like the perfect place to ground in one’s craft considering this subject matter. ❣️
