Where art comes alive, movement becomes a story ✨

A journey through inspiration, creation and emotions — exploring what happens when the artist becomes part of the art and the art becomes a piece of the artist.

For this seasons Free Dance, we were inspired by the world of art in a few different ways.

One of our starting points was this year’s Met Gala theme, Costume Art, which explored the relationship between fashion and the human body, and how art can exist through and transform the person wearing it. This idea made us want to explore a similar relationship between an artist and their art.

From there, we sought the help of Fernando Suarez, a contemporary abstract artist based here in Montreal, to better learn about the life of an artist and the relationship they have with their work. Throughout an artist’s life, their experiences, emotions, memories become woven into what they create. Although an artist’s commitment to artistry and their craft is lifelong, we were fascinated about how this intimate relationship changes through the different stages of creation, from the first spark of an idea to the moment a piece is finally complete. There is something both intimate and fleeting about this process, as an artist pours something of themselves into their work, only to eventually let it exist beyond them. These pieces hold memories, feelings and stories, carrying traces of their creators long after they are gone.

Our new Free Dance brings this relationship to life on the ice, exploring the connection between artist and art, creator and creation, and the pieces of ourselves that we leave behind to live on.
