The opening event for Grand Prix France is the Rhythm Dance - which is what the ice dance short program is called for unexplainable reasons. Each season a compulsory dance form is featured - this year it is the Golden Waltz. Not too many years ago the compulsory dance was a third event in ice dance. When that was eliminated for being too audience unfriendly, it was decided to incorporate it into the short program. I liked compulsories, but that's just me. It's a chance to see each couple do the exact same steps and compare. Now you can find those steps somewhere buried in each Rhythm Dance.

Ice Dance is the hardest form of figure skating to assess intelligently. I know what I like, but it doesn't always agree with the judges, who are looking for edges and flow. Ice Dance's hardest element is the twizzles, and the elements which usually separate the teams is both the compulsory dance and the step sequences. Without doubt ice dance is the best discipline for displaying intricate choreography, and it remains my favorite of all forms of figure skating to watch.

Of paramount interest here is the season debut of @laurencefournierbeaudry and @guillaume_cizeron whose Rhythm Dance for the season is yet to be seen anywhere! They're using the music of Rosalia, and that's only recently been announced. This incredible pair has been together for only a year, but they've already won Gold at the 2026 Olympics, so obviously they're heavily favored to win here. Guillaume stands apart as possibly the greatest male ice dancer ever. I add the possibly for others; I don't doubt it at all.

The other two contenders would have to be the Georgians - @di__davis & @glebsmolkin7 and the Americans - @christinacarreira & @anthony.ponomarenko. I particularly like the latter's new program using music from My Fair Lady.

Others who are on the rise are @hollyharr1s & @jason.chan0 from Australia as well as another American team - @eva.pate & @logan_bye1 whom I always find utterly enchanting.

I don't have space to fully explore the other entries, so I urge you to visit @icedancecom or their website ice-dance.com for detailed breakdowns.

My thanks to @skate_takesfs for the cover photo.

Where art comes alive, movement becomes a story ✨

A journey through inspiration, creation and emotions — exploring what happens when the artist becomes part of the art and the art becomes a piece of the artist.
