Our GrandGary turned eight today and made a decision that means a great deal to him and to our family. He chose to be baptized!

In our faith, baptism is a sacred promise to follow Jesus Christ, love others, serve those in need, and try each day to become a little more like Him.

But whatever your faith tradition, or even if you don’t have one, there’s something beautiful about a young person beginning to understand that life is about more than just ourselves.

That choices matter. That we can make the world a little better by the way we treat the people in it.

Gary has a lifetime of learning, growing, making mistakes, repenting, and drawing closer to Jesus. Just like the rest of us.

And today, surrounded by people who love him, he took a meaningful step on his own journey.

We couldn’t be more proud. ❤️

My friend wasn’t asking God for anything.

I was walking back from a laundromat in Belo Horizonte, pulling a suitcase stuffed with laundry and feeling more than a little frustrated. The morning hadn’t gone according to plan, the laundry had taken longer than I’d hoped, and we had a very tight window to get packed up and make our flight to São Paulo for the final leg of our trip.

I was in a hurry. And not in my most grateful mood.

Then I saw Marcelo.

He was in a busy median a few blocks from our Airbnb, surrounded by the small things he sells to earn a little money. As you can see, he was on his knees praying.

When he was done, I walked up and asked him a question in my rusty Portuguese.

“May I ask what you’re praying for today?”

“Por nada,” he said.

Marcelo told me he never starts his day without prayer, but that on that morning, he was simply thanking God for his blessings.

He wasn’t asking God for money, food, or a roof over his head.

We chatted and I bought a few of his things. Then I gave him some money from the Kindness Card Movement. But his first instinct was to give me more merchandise.

I explained that wasn’t how this worked. 😂 I pulled out my phone and showed him pictures of people I’ve met through the movement, and his smile grew.

When Marcelo realized he was now part of that story—that somewhere in America people would see his face and hear about the man in Belo Horizonte who begins every day on his knees—he was honored.

Then, as I walked away, he prayed again.
Marcelo was one of several people I met in Brazil because some of you donated to the Kindness Card Movement just before I left. I have a few more of those stories to tell.

The truth is, that morning I was frustrated about laundry and worried about making a flight.

Marcelo was living on the streets and thinking about gratitude.

I’ve met a lot of people through the Kindness Card Movement, and I know we’ve helped some of them. But every once in a while, I meet someone who gives me considerably more than I give them.

Marcelo was one of those people.

For 35 years, I’ve had the same dream more times than I can count.

I’m back in Brazil.

The city changes sometimes, but often I’m in Sete Lagoas, the city where my mission began. I’m walking streets and looking for people I haven’t seen since 1991.

Sometimes I find them. Sometimes I wake up first.

Last Monday, I didn’t wake up.

On my first full day back in Brazil, I returned to Sete Lagoas. That night, thanks largely to my dear friend Leninha, who helped organize it all, I found myself surrounded by people I had taught and loved as a young missionary. And we were gathered in the same home where I had taught the Torres family.

We ate, sang, laughed, exchanged gifts and told stories. At one point, I was asked to share some remarks. I looked across the group and wept.

A few minutes later, I thought about how little a young missionary understands about time.

You teach people and love them and pray for them. Then you’re transferred. Eventually you go home. And everyone gets on with the business of living their lives.

What you don’t get to see is everything that happens next.

Most of the people in this group are people I had the privilege of teaching and baptizing as a young missionary. Many have remained deeply involved in the Church. They served missions of their own, and now some of their children are serving missions.

Others have taken different paths. But every single one of them mattered to me then, and every single one of them matters to me now.

When you’re young and serving a mission, you think you’re seeing the story. You’re really only seeing the first few pages.

You may have noticed I was deliberate while I was in Brazil about not posting too much. I wanted to be there. I wanted to enjoy the experiences and live the stories instead of worrying about telling them in real time.

Now that I’m home, I’d like to share a few stories about what happened after I left Brazil. I never knew them until now.

For 35 years I’ve wondered what it would feel like if one of those dreams ever came true.

Now I know.

It feels like coming home.

A quick word about this girl. ❤️

I’ve spent a lot of time sharing stories about people I love in Brazil. Today I need to say something about the person I came home to.

Kodi knew how much this trip meant to me. She knew how long I’d dreamed about going back, and from the beginning she was nothing but supportive of me going and making the most of every minute. She wanted to come along, of course, but it just wasn’t possible right now.

There’s something else about @kodicrew that I probably don’t say enough.

When I travel, I don’t come home to a list.

There’s never a rundown of things that broke, calls I need to make, people I need to contact or problems that waited for me to solve them. That’s just not who she is. Never has been.

If something needs fixing, she does it. If someone needs to be called, she calls. If a problem pops up, she handles it. She just keeps life moving.

So when I come home slightly jet-lagged, ridiculously behind and still processing so many years’ worth of emotions, I get to glide back into real life pretty easily.

Because she steers our ship so beautifully.

She supports the adventures, listens to the stories, celebrates the good stuff and somehow keeps everything moving while I’m off having them.

I’m a lucky guy.

Thanks for sending me off, welcoming me home and loving me through all of it, Kodi!

Now, apparently, the only thing I need to do is unpack. The girl has her limits. 🤪 by @jasonfwright

I’m not sure when I’ll have the words to describe what last night’s reunion in Sete Lagoas was like, but I know it’s not this morning. 🥹

So here’s just a taste: We reenacted a photo taken in this exact same spot 35 years ago.

Though the surroundings might look a little different, it’s the same house, same sacred ground, same love.

Much more to come. 🇧🇷❤️

🇧🇷❤️ by @jasonfwright

On Saturday, I finally fly to Brazil. 🇧🇷

I’ve dreamt about my mission hundreds of times since I left in 1992. Now I’ll walk the streets of Sete Lagoas, Belo Horizonte and Viçosa again, this time with my daughter Jadi and her husband, Nate.

I’ve sat at hundreds of tables like this one. Rice and beans on every plate. Juice poured from a plastic pitcher. Families set that meal in front of two hungry missionaries and went without so we wouldn’t.

I didn’t understand what that cost them back then. I do now.
