$This book is starting to feel real . . . @jasonfwright asked me WHY did I write HER AMERICA? So I thought about it and then wrote up something official: History is full of remarkable, resilient women who fought for a more equitable society. Starting with the Revolutionary writer and first published female historian, Mercy Otis Warren, I wanted to dive a little deeper into the lives of eight remarkable women who faced immense challenges while trailblazing effective change. This book is unique in the sense that I’ve interwoven both historical-fiction vignettes and nonfiction sections in order to provide a fuller and more intimate understanding of their lives. Although I’ve studied history my entire career, I was deeply moved when learning about the personal and family challenges these women dealt with while championing for civil rights and ethical change. Women such as Harriet Tubman lived with severe chronic pain from a traumatic brain injury, while Susan B. Anthony diligently campaigned often without knowing where her next meal would come from, and Eleanor Roosevelt devoted her time to civil rights activism while emotionally suffering in a fractured marriage. These eight women laid their hearts open and put their souls into writing, speaking, and organizing as they rallied others to fight for justice in order to secure a stronger and safer future for all of us today.
