3 Non-Negotiables as a Monitor Engineer1️⃣ Watch your artist and band at all times.The stage will tell you what the talkback won’t. Body language is often the first sign that something needs attention.2️⃣ Constantly flip through mixes.A monitor mix is never “finished.” Stay proactive, clean up what isn’t needed, and make adjustments before they become requests.3️⃣ Never look overwhelmed.Artists feed off your energy. Until I realized I was studying my craft in live sound at the same time.TBT july 2017These rehearsals happened right in my living room, and my band put up with all the trial and error while I figured things out. Looking back, they probably had no idea they were helping shape the engineer I’d become.As an artist, I thought I was just rehearsing songs. This one’s a little more technical, but it can make a huge difference in how your snare sounds live.⬇️ Read my 3 snare mic placement tips below. ⬇️🥁 1. Align your top & bottom micsKeep both mics aimed at the same part of the drum so they capture the snare consistently. Better alignment = better phase relationship.📏 2. Watch your distanceStart with the top mic about 1–2 inches above the rim, aimed toward the center. Keep the bottom mic at a similar distance from the snare wires for a balanced tone.🔄 3. Check your polarityThe bottom mic usually needs its polarity flipped because it’s moving opposite the top mic. This week was 🔥.I had the opportunity to work with the legendary @Common, and he was generous enough to let me capture the entire process—from rehearsal, to soundcheck, all the way through the show.As y’all know, I’ve been pushing myself to get better behind the camera just as much as I do behind the console. ⬇️ READ MY WEDGE RING-OUT TIPS BELOW ⬇️One of the biggest mistakes I see with monitor engineers is over-EQ’ing wedges.Remember: Less is more. Every cut you make changes the tone, and too many cuts can leave the wedge sounding lifeless while actually reducing usable gain.Here are a few frequencies I pay close attention to:🎤 1.6 kHz – Honky, nasal, megaphone-type feedback. This range can become aggressive fast.🎤 2.5 kHz – Harsh, biting, painful to the ears. Usually where vocals start feeling uncomfortable if it takes off.🎤 6.3 kHz – Sharp whistle or piercing squeal. Often the first frequency that grabs everyone’s attention.🎤 HPF (High-Pass Filter) – Roll off unnecessary low-end rumble before reaching for EQ. Cleaning up lows often gives you more headroom without carving up the wedge.💡 Pro Tip: Don’t chase every tiny ring. Learn which frequencies are actually causing problems and make the smallest cut necessary.
