I couldn't wait to share this stunning palette with you. During my residency with @knitforwildlife we have been in touch with various biologists and experts of the Vega Archipelago in Norway gathering insights from this unique environment. As a textile designer living in Toronto it was so important to me to bring Canadian artistry into this research. I am so proud to be using @atelierperluette for this project. Their fibers have some of the most beautiful colours I have ever seen

My work involves sound and, because of that, I am creating a colour code to translate the fluctuation in sound waves into colours and textures I can knit. To materialize this, I have chosen 100% Wild Silk, 100% Linen and a blend of 70% Mohair + 30% Silk. I will be sharing more details about the unique properties of each one as the project progresses

By pairing these fibers together I will be transforming sound frequencies into a wearable landscape. I am starting to knit the first observations today, I cannot wait to show you how this research takes shape on the needles😍
I cannot thank @atelierperluette enough for making this perfect palette a reality and @knitforwildlife for this incredible opportunity

What if one of the most luxurious elements of a gown was also the most honest?

In Lucila Castaño’s evolving design for @leonoralysglimt (as part of Miss Cosmo 2026), the star is something far quieter than we usually associate with a show-stopping gown: Eiderdown from the Vega World Heritage area in northern Norway.

Eiderdown is an extraordinary luxury material - exceptionally light, insulating and rare. But the down being worked into this dress has something that luxury materials so often lack: Provenance. It comes directly from the bird-tending tradition of Vega; including Snefrid from Hysvær and the bird tenders of @utvaeretlanan where wild eiders return to nest in shelters prepared and protected by people. Only after the birds and their young have left are the small amounts of down remaining in the nests collected.

For Lucila, the challenge has been how to let such a delicate material remain itself. She has been experimenting with different ways of incorporating the loose down into the knitted surface rather than turning it into something polished and unrecognisable. One experiment is particularly beautiful: The down catches around fine threads, recalling the traditional process of harping, where eiderdown’s remarkable ability to cling to itself helps separate it from debris.

And its placement on the gown is not accidental.

The down begins in abundance around the upper body. Moving down the dress, it becomes increasingly fragmented. Scarcer. Until it almost disappears. It is a visual language for seabird decline - told through the gradual disappearance of the material itself.

There is something compelling about placing that story in the world of fashion and pop culture. An exclusive gown can be glamorous, desirable and spectacular, while its most extraordinary material remains authentic to where it came from. And it can carry a conservation story onto a stage where few people would expect to encounter one.

And there is one BIG part of this story we are deliberately not telling you yet.... by @jauriatextil

Meet the woman behind the dress 🧶🦆

Textile designer Lucila Castaño is turning our seabird story into something we’ve never done before: A one-of-a-kind knitted dress for @leonoralysglimt to take to Miss Cosmo 2026.

Knitted seabirds. Embroidery. Real eiderdown from the bird tenders of Vega World Heritage.

And a LOT happening behind the scenes right now. Some details we can show you. Some we’re keeping secret just a little longer😉 by @jauriatextil

THE SECRET IS OUT🥳🧶

Knit for Wildlife is going to MISS COSMO!! @misscosmointernational

And we’re bringing seabirds with us.

This winter, the amazing Miss Norway @leonoralysglimt will step onto the international Miss Cosmo stage in Vietnam - wearing something very different:

A knitted dress created by textile designer Lucila Castaño @jauriatextil Telling the story of seabird decline. Knitted. Embroidered seabirds. And incorporating real eiderdown, collected by the bird tenders of Vega World Heritage @utvaeretlanan

It’s our biggest Trojan horse yet.

We talk a lot about taking wildlife stories outside the conservation bubble. Into fashion. Culture. Social media. Everyday life. Places where millions of people who may never follow a conservation organisation can suddenly encounter one.

So… what happens when we take a story about disappearing seabirds and put it on an international beauty stage?

We’re about to find out😊🙏

Thank You @leonoralysglimt for inviting us on this surreal journey❤
