A recent 16x20 commission💛
“What is it? What does it mean?”
It changes every time I come across it. Just when I think I’ve come to a conclusion, I turn the painting 180 degrees.
Sometimes I see it as figures with a story, other days fragments remind me of places I’ve been to or memories I have. A lot of the time it’s just colors, shapes, and lines- mark making on a canvas.
When you experience art, do you seek to find a meaning? A narrative? A relation? A comparison?
At times I become obsessed with finding significance and understanding, a fixation that ends up holding me back from experiencing.
Some things just are, and it doesn’t have to make sense. Does that make sense? by @javelin.m

There was a time where I chuckled when I looked at an orange split down the middle and saw juicy anatomy over fruit slices. Innuendos in my afternoon snack followed me long after noon and reappeared bedside when I was met with blossoming folds in my blanket and another chuckle.
There are intimate curves all around revealing themselves to me, of me.

Found my first gray hair while painting this in quarantine, going to go back and paint a sterling strand in.
Every few years I make a self-portrait to see how much I’ve learned about myself, the techniques I’ve picked up, and how I view the aging process. Like a longitudinal study, observing life and reporting back via oil paint. Every return looks different than the last. Laugh lines deepen, and colors mean more. A soft reminder that this second is short-lived, yet exists forever through me.
Wondering how many gray hairs will be in my next portrait.
