As latinos in the United States, it can be easy to lose sight that we are privileged. It’s easy to look at the affluent, white population and by comparison, conclude they are the privileged ones. There is a distinction to be made that we may be less privileged than them—nonetheless we have shelter, we have running water, we have phones and wifi and we don’t think twice about waking up to our homes and communities being bombed. We don’t live in the middle of a genocide, or a war zone. We have the PRIVILEGE to turn on the news and turn it off when we get uncomfortable. While the massacres, starvation and bombs are real human beings’, families’ and childrens’ realities…that they do not get to turn away from.

In all my privilege, I find myself tired of hearing that I can’t save everyone. I know I can’t—but I can do something. Anything. Anything but nothing.

So, I organized to aid a Cuban Donation Drive at school with @uc_latinlc . Outside school, I hosted a sip & paint at my apartment. Our shared project was to make cards to send with donations showing love for the children of Cuba during this humanitarian crisis.

Instead of a potluck, I asked for donations and empathy. “To empathize with our brothers and sisters in Cuba, the innocent children of Cuba. In the name of love and solidarity, I invite you to be generous within your means”.

They are still accepting donations until March 11th. The flyer is the last slide if you’d like to donate anything especially suitcases, medical supplies or hygiene products. (No food, clothes or shoes).

Thank you to everyone who supported the cause it means a lot to me and I know it will mean a lot to Cubans during this dystopian time.
