In search of an architecture that does not need interior design..
*
When the very structure of the building is revealed and not masked by synthetics.. feel the forces running through exposed golden beams, the compression of the raw concrete grounding your feet..
*
Maybe the true art of architecture is this ability to reveal the materials that are performing in the spaces you live, not hidden behind drywall, trims and bulkheads...

Interior views of the master bathroom with views to the ravine and surrounding greenspace.
*
The classic tub from the original home was repurposed in the washroom as part of the subtle vintage touch to the interior design.
*
Heated and polished concrete floors with a tile in-laid at the shower. Floor to ceiling windows under exposed Douglas Fir beams, providing a golden hue throughout the home.

Wide angle of the massive cantilever on the #lifthouse. Guards on the deck feel transparent with the stainless steel mesh giving a whole new meaning to chain link fences...
*
Swipe for some interior views showing the polished radiant concrete floor. The roof is framed with exposed 4"x12" Douglas Fir beams every 3'-0" with a tongue and groove plank on top, keeping the interior feeling extra warm and golden.
*
Windows by Inline Fibreglass, all black interior and exterior, triple pane. Solid core doors are Douglas Fir wood with that lovely grain...

Final exterior photos of #lifthouse in Port Hope.
*
The project actually started as a multi shipping container house proposal but evolved into a timber frame sitting on a steel structure hosting a massive concrete pour. We used a vic west horizontal corrugation in matte black on all exterior walls to keep the building feeling uniform and stealthy...
*
Swipe for views from the river on the south side of the lot, where the master bathroom cantilevers over the green space.

Final shots of our project in Port Hope, Ontario aka the LIFThouse - a 1500 sf addition to an existing mill that is ALL 2nd floor. The addition includes a 1500 sf exterior deck cantilevered on both sides adjacent to the Ganaraska river.
*
One of the reasons it's called the LIFThouse, beside the fact that it's completely elevated off grade, is the hoist beam that stretches past the deck to allow large objects to be lifted onto the second floor. This attention to function and practicality inspired by our innovative clients, Rod and Massumi who are always prototyping new gadgets that can be incorporated into the architecture 🙏🏽

Qammaq is an insulated winter dwelling in Inuktitut - the language predominantly spoken in Nunavut. The prototype home is a hybrid of container, SIP panel and timber framing. Garage designed for polar bear accessibility.

Hybrid container proposal for Iquailit, Nunavut up north. Hoping this prototype can be used for modular development in a community experiencing an extreme housing crisis.

Assessing the modular capacity of our #metaunits proposal in case a hospital required several new triage or treatment spaces to be connected to the hospital.
It's interesting seeing the innovation and collaboration breeding in the design community internationally right now - it's kinda disappointing that we needed a global crisis to legitimately want to work together for a common goal... Hope that spirit continues even if we get through the worst of covid
