I rarely share news/wire assignments or coverage, but this is different. It happened right there in the barrio where I’ve been since I moved to NY eight years ago. The only time I’ve seen this energy here in the city was during the dark times of racial abuse and unrest of May 2020. This was different—a steam releaser, collective hugs, summery, hot, and sexy madness in orange and blue. I just stayed in Bed-Stuy the whole night, surrounded by old and new friends. Almost 12 years ago, my brother @santbanez invited me to shoot an editorial for his clothing brand project #insanis. I was in Brazil already working for my long-term project about the housing crisis in São Paulo, but the invitation was too good to say no. We would go to the Favela do Vidigal in Rio de Janeiro, on little scooters, led by the actor, singer, and artist Jonathan Azevedo @negblack , who was born and raised there. Speeding uphill, weaving through narrow streets, drinking pingas from a little hole in a wall, with gorgeous views of the port—vividly experiencing the daily life far from the “pacified/gentrified” vision, only a couple of years after the military intervention that reduced gang violence drastically. Jonathan and Felipe would open conversations with friends and strangers, gifting pieces of the new collection away. I would photograph everything, like an intense, surreal carioca fever dream. A couple of years later, I lost a hard drive with the totality of the material. Only having a few files left through some emails and TIFFs from other duplicates, I later learned the lesson: kids, obey your gut and double back it up. #archive #riodejaneiro #vidigal taken in Vidigal, Rio de Janeiro by @javieralvarezm

“In April 2019, Moroccan border police forcibly expelled almost 200 West and Central African refugees from Tangier and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. They were abandoned in Casablanca, stripped of belongings, and stranded over 300 km from the Strait of Gibraltar. While documenting this forced displacement, I met young people who asked a simple but powerful question: “Can you send a message to my family?” Many had not spoken to loved ones in months. These images come from a collaborative process in which they expressed their journey as messages to their families, most often their mothers. In 2023, @billy__chuck and I, travelled to Valparaíso, Florida, as part of a commission by Imagen Salvaje @imagensalvaje_fifv @anamaria_briede_republica760 , later presented at the Valparaíso International Photography Festival @casaespacio_fifv The town is host to the Eglin Air Force Base—the largest military air base in the world. We photographed A-bombs replicas, war crimes dioramas, outdoor displays, military schools and football games. Erased landscapes in an open-air archive of institutional violence—where destruction is preserved, formalized, and celebrated. Then we edited the work and made a dummy that has never been published.
