It’s finally here. After three great and difficult years, Outside is officially a book. It’s 160 pgs, but could have easily been 300 if not for financial considerations. I’m very happy with it. I don’t mind saying that it’s a beautiful book because the people within it are beautiful, as are the people who showed me how to make it, as are the people who helped me stay alive long enough to complete it. So many people authored this book. I won’t try to thank you all here, you all know how grateful I am. Please come join us on November 7th from 5-8pm at Franklin Foto for the book release.

And hey. How many homeless people do you think local policy makers have killed by giving absolute power and impunity to agencies like Rapid Response and PPD to rob and displace people precisely because they have so few material possessions, not to mention human rights? Those deaths will go down as suicides and overdoses and exposure to the elements and natural causes, but if you’ve spent any time on the streets you know better. I don’t want to hear about choices, either. Citizens love to talk about the choices street people make/have made, but they always seem to forget about the mitigating circumstances informing those choices. Nobody ever asked me if I wanted to be an alcoholic, or a dope fiend, or abused, or abandoned, or mentally challenged, or disabled. They just gave me the number when I was young.

Ahem!

Many thanks and all love to Yvonne, Merlin, Christianna, Sony, Mo and everyone who made photos with me in these past three years.

“It’s about freedom. The freedom is first.”

For people forced to flee #SouthSudan, displacement does not always end with crossing a border. For some, it becomes a long journey from one place of uncertainty to another.

Many had already experienced years of displacement first fleeing conflict in South Sudan, then the war that broke out in #Sudan in 2023.

In 2026, #oceanviking teams rescued 19 South Sudanese people in the central #Mediterranean.

Among them were James*, Ayman* and Sudan*, who shared stories of war, repeated displacement, survival and their hopes for a safer future.

🎥 Watch their testimony and listen to their voices on our website.

“In April 2019, Moroccan border police forcibly expelled almost 200 West and Central African refugees from Tangier and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. They were abandoned in Casablanca, stripped of belongings, and stranded over 300 km from the Strait of Gibraltar.

While documenting this forced displacement, I met young people who asked a simple but powerful question: “Can you send a message to my family?” Many had not spoken to loved ones in months. These images come from a collaborative process in which they expressed their journey as messages to their families, most often their mothers. Some addresses were untraceable; others were sent without proof of delivery.”

"In 2019, almost 200 refugees were expelled from Morocco’s northern border and abandoned in Casablanca. While documenting this, young people asked me to help send messages home—mostly to their mothers.
These portraits and letters became “Salut Maman,” a quiet but urgent testament to youth on the move in North Africa, whose voices often go unheard as they carry messages across closed borders and uncertain paths."

Congrats to ZUMA’s @javieralvarezm who has been recognized in the ‘Photojournalists in the World’ section by POY Latam for his documentary project covering refugee rescues in the Mediterranean sea. Alvarez covered the Ocean Viking, a humanitarian vessel operated by SOS Méditerranée, as they rescued people of all ages, including families with small children, who were fleeing violence, captivity, and forced labor in Libya with hopes of safety and stability in Italy.
