🗣️ JUSTICE FOR RASHAWN KNIGHT 🗣️

Instead of JSO speaking with RaShawn’s mother Egypt about the circumstances of his brutalization by officers and K-9s and his arrest, they decided to go on a press tour and comment on our posts calling for accountability.

JSO’s comments on Instagram, Facebook and their press release play on racist stereotypes about RaShawn’s size in order to try and justify the officers’ treatment of him. JSO uses clipped body camera footage, exposing their violent actions, and captions it as “distraction strikes” and “acceptable policy.”

While JSO’s 6-figure PR team was in our comments, JSO officers have mishandled a mother’s calling in her teenage son’s suicide and shot and killed a woman on a call concerning domestic violence.

JCAC and The People say no more.

The People of Jacksonville have been demanding a People's Budget for six years.

Instead of funding our public schools, transportation, affordable housing and mental health, the mayor and city council has continued to increase JSO's budget to over $600 million.

🗣️ JUSTICE FOR KIYAN ATKINSON 🗣️

Body camera footage of JSO's shooting Kiyan Atkinson was released last night in a monstrous attempt to demonize someone who needed aid from a mental health professional.

On June 7, Kiyan's family called for help to manage a mental health episode. Today, Kiyan is in a coma, paralyzed and chained to a hospital bed under 24/7 JSO surveillance without visitation.

This is why we need a Mental Health Response Team.
Abusers, terrorizers and killers should not be sent to manage mental health crises.

Kiyan deserves better - Brian, Harold, Jose, Justin, Leah, Rashaud deserved better - Jacksonville deserves better.

Jacksonville, FL – On September 26, about 50 people gathered to celebrate Alquan Suydam’s 30th birthday, honoring a life cut short when Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) deputies shot and killed him last year.

The event, organized by the Jacksonville Community Action Committee and A Mother’s Cry – an advocacy group of those who have lost loved ones to police brutality – included food, music and games, as attendees remembered Suydam.

🗣️ JUSTICE FOR ALQUAN 🗣️

The Jacksonville Community Action Committee and Alquan’s family invite the city to celebrate a son, a brother, a friend lost to the dirty hands of JSO.

28-year-old Alquan Suydam was shot and killed by JSO on March 30, 2025.
It was not until September 8 of this year that “investigations” by JSO and the State Attorney’s Office concluded, and the officers involved were found “justified under applicable Florida Law.” Shame!

We will not stop fighting, speaking out, demanding answers and justice until JSO is held accountable for their overreach, their abuse and their crimes.

Despite concern from residents of Jacksonville, City Council approved the budget with no revision to the whopping $1.07 Billion allocated to Jacksonville Sherrif’s Office! This amount makes up over HALF of the entire budget. We must ask, how will JSO use these funds? To continue over policing and violence in Black neighborhoods? To continue acting as ICE agents in our streets under their 287g agreement, possibly with new weapons?

We say NO to this! We want a People’s Budget now, no more funding for bloated police budgets, and an END to JSO’s 287g agreement with ICE.

Jacksonville, FL– As summer comes to a close, the Jacksonville Community Action Committee (JCAC) has completed a second year of their Popular Education in the Park series.

Each summer, the committee chooses a series of public parks in primarily Black neighborhoods to host a teach-in and barbecue. The heart of the series is the outreach. Leading up to each event, the group contacts neighborhood associations, businesses and churches. Most importantly, they knock on doors to invite residents into the space to discuss the needs in the neighborhood. This season, the Jacksonville Community Action Committee knocked on over 600 doors to listen to the concerns of Jacksonville residents who often go unheard.
