Turning PAIN into PURPOSE

Growing up I went through a lot of pain. A lot of darkness.

At 16 years old I discovered personal development. And through this, I began to learn an important lesson.. I learned that everything happens FOR US. Not to us

This was the turning point for me.. From that point forward I decided I was gonna commit my life to doing just that. Turning my pain into purpose. Through the development of my mind, body & spirit

I knew that if I could heal myself.. I could help so many others do the same

12 years later I’m doing just that :) taken in Colorado Springs, Colorado by @jay_azeltine

Hanging from a bar is one of the simplest, yet highest ROI habits that most aren’t doing

Common benefits include

- Less shoulder, neck & back pain
- Stronger grip
- Better posture

If you don’t have the strength to perform a full bar hang.. here’s a progression you can use to build up to doing weighted hangs

Hanging for a total of 3 min per day (total) is a good benchmark

This can be spread out throughout the day in 30-60 second sets

I personally have a door frame pull up bar at home. It makes it easy for me to hang throughout the day

High stress. Chronic fatigue. Reactive & on edge

Most men have normalized living life this way

You can only redline your body for so long.. before disease begins to appear

Well before you get to that point, you begin to become increasingly less effective in every aspect of your life. At work. As a husband. Father.

I believe in a “go slower to go faster” approach

Being intentional with your rest

Whether you’re taking a week for yourself to retreat. To fully reset & fill up your cup

Or it’s taking 10 min every morning to sit in silence & connecting with yourself / God

Prioritize slowing down more. You don’t have to go through life exhausted all the time. On the verge of having a meltdown

Struggling with knee pain?

Oftentimes strengthening everything around your knees helps improve your knees

Here are 3 exercises that you can try

1) ATG Split Squats

One of the best ways to build strong, resilient knees by training them through a full range of motion.

Stay tall, keep the heel down, and think “smooth and deep” rather than forcing range.

Cues: drive the front knee forward, keep most of your weight on that front leg, and use the back leg more for balance than pushing.

2) Copenhagen Planks

One of the best ways to build strong inner thighs (adductors), which play a huge role in stabilizing the knee and reducing pain

Cues: stay in a straight line, don’t let your hips sag, and think about pulling the bottom leg up into the top leg rather than just hanging there.

3) Seated Band Leg Curls

Simple way to strengthen your hamstrings, which help balance out the knee and take pressure off the joint. Most people are quad dominant.. this is a great finisher for leg days where u can crank high volume (20-30 reps per set.. with low impact on joints)

Cues: keep tension on the band the whole time, control the lowering, and think about pulling your heel back using your hamstring.. not just moving your foot.

FYI - knee pain can be very layered. Just as any injuries are. It can have to do with your hips & ankles as well. Poor hip stability & mobility. Weak & uncoordinated glutes. Stiff ankles. & more

It’s all about experimenting & seeing what helps your body specifically

Life has a way of testing us

As soon as we start settling into a groove.. Something arises to test us.

You either sustain through & get stronger. Building more momentum. Or it knocks you off your path. You give up

The stronger the WHY (why you’re doing what you’re doing), the more likely you will stay the course no matter the challenge

Are you hanging regularly?

Grip strength is one of the strongest indicators of how long you will live

Here’s the thing though..

Grip strength itself isn’t magic

But it does tell us a lot about things that affect your health

- Overall muscle mass
- Nervous system function

It’s a snapshot of how well your body is holding up

In addition.. Hanging often is great for your posture, shoulder health & much more

Hang as often as you can. I do 4-5 days per week. Oftentimes multiple times per day

If you can’t hang for at least 30 seconds.. You got work to do

Struggle with low back pain?

For many years I did as well. 10+ years of powerlifting took its toll. In addition to a gnarly knee injury that snapped my leg in half

There can be many reasons for back pain

But one common factor is a weak core. 6 pack abs ≠ strong core. Most overlook the transverse abdominis. A sheet of muscle underneath the “6 pack” abs

Dr Stuart McGill, a leading expert on back pain, made the “McGill Big 3” famous for being a simple fix for most people’s pain. Strengthening the transverse abdominis. Building stability in the core.

It has played a pivotal role in my recovery

It’s best done 6 days per week. Only takes 5-10 minutes

I do 2 sets of each.

Side planks x 30 sec each side

Bird dogs x 3 each side (10 sec hold each rep.. squeezing core tight)

Curl ups x 6 (10 sec hold each)

Are you highly stressed?

Feel like you’re constantly on edge?

Here’s a simple solution to help you feel more regulated in your body

Start your mornings slow. Let your nervous system acclimate & prime for the day ahead

Take time to breathe, stretch, feel gratitude

Before you get into the phone & start drinking coffee

We have the potential to change our life at any time

Any day can be the day that everything changed. That our life began to improve dramatically

If you’re seeking transformation, start here

1) Clearly define the vision of the person you want to be & the life you want to live

2) An object in motion stays in motion. Movement is medicine. Walk. Exercise. Stretch. Breathe.

Most men are on the brink of complete burn out at all times

Nervous systems dysregulated. Feeling “on edge”

It’s OKAY to take time for yourself.

If you don’t.. eventually your cup will run dry. And you won’t have anything left to give

Sometimes you gotta “go slower, to go faster”

The reason you aren’t losing weight isn’t bad genetics.. It isn’t because you’re eating foods that don’t let you lose weight.. none of those silly reasons

It’s actually much simpler than that

You aren’t losing weight because you’re eating more calories than you think. And likely burning less than you think

At the simplest level.. Weight loss comes down to consuming less calories than you eat

If you’re struggling to lose weight, I encourage you to track everything you eat for a few weeks. Weigh it on a food scale. Track it in an app like myfitnesspal.

Getting a fitness watch to track your activity can be very helpful as well

You can’t change what you don’t track

Progression from the Bar Hang Hamstring hold I posted a few days ago that went viral

-> Bar Hang Hamstring Hold + Adductor Squeeze <-

The original hold is targeting mostly the hamstrings & some glutes

By adding the med ball between the legs & squeezing as tight as u can, you’re now activating the adductor muscles (inner thighs). Act like ur trying to crack the ball like a peanut

Then adding a chain or some sort of weight on the calves to create extra load for the hamstrings

This may look like some silly “fitfluencer” exercise for clicks.. It’s far from it

This is a very functional exercise that will absolutely wreck your hamstrings in 1-2 sets. 30 sec hold (if u can)

Great for athletes to avoid cramping & blown hamstrings. But also great for anyone who wants to be functional & strong for life

I like to use it as a warm up to activate the legs before moving into more dynamic exercises
