The impossible treble….

19 years old, living at home in Genoa.

U23 World Champion 🌈
Giro NXT Gen 🏆
L’Avenir 🏆

Becomes the first rider in history to win both major U23 GC races while wearing the World Champion’s jersey, and the first Italian in 53 years to win L’Avenir.

Along the way, winning two stages emphatically, as well as the White Jersey and KOM Jersey, and doing it with the biggest winning margin in over 20 years.

Why stay U23 when he could have turned pro?

Because it was the plan….

Learn how to be a leader. Make & learn from mistakes. Keep developing. Go and try to win the two big GC races in the World Champion’s jersey, and give himself more time to physically and mentally develop and prepare for the WorldTour.

The most spectacular U23 season of all time at 19.

I’ve been trying to find the “right” words to share, and I’ve finally realised there are no right words, only true ones.

I met Fin for the first time in April 2022 at Roubaix. I was already working with Josh. Dawn was struggling to find parking for the motorhome, so I jumped in and we did a few laps near the velodrome before finding somewhere to park. Fin came into his own chatting about the race and cycling.

In September, He travelled to Worlds to support Josh. Fin was asked if he was “the brother of Josh”. His quirky response? “Josh is the brother of me, actually.”

Funny, cheeky in the best possible way, with a wicked dry sense of humour, no doubt perfected with his brother from a young age. He had an endearing innocence and curiosity that was infectious, along with a big, grinny smile.

When he stayed with us, he’d always talk cycling first — all the gossip. He’d be annoyed he couldn’t climb with the 56-kilo guys or slip away from the sprinters inside the final 5km.

“Hey, when will I turn pro? Come on, man, I’m ready.”

Moments later, he’d settle into Bluey with Mia. He loved Aussies and Aussie banter.

His happy place was riding his bike, and he had made huge progress over the past 12 months on his pathway to turning professional. The only morsel of comfort we can take from this tragedy is that he left us doing what he loved.

Please keep his loved ones, Josh, Dawn and Michael, his grandparents, friends, teammates and staff in your prayers. Thanks NSN & Ineos for all the support of the boys and to all who have send support and offer help it’s appreciated.

We are a small sport and community, but we know how to come together — sadly, often only in times of tragedy.

One life lost is too many.

Rider safety can no longer be a retrospective discussion. It needs to be the number one priority of our governing bodies and race organisations.

Many of us stand on one side of the barrier. Only a select few have the ability, determination, resilience, and work ethic to make it to the other side.

Congratulations, Josh, on becoming our first men’s Tour de France finisher. An incredible achievement that will inspire the next generation of Welsh cyclists for years to come.

Plans all too often change in elite sport due to setbacks. This one didn’t , Ok two broken bones and two surgeries along the way. But as the saying goes: “If you hang around a barbershop long enough, sooner or later, you’re going to get a haircut.”

The road map was agreed in January 2024: two shots at the Giro Nxt Gen, L’Avenir, and the World Championships before stepping up to the WorldTour.

Never in our wildest dreams did we think that 2.5 years later Lollo would go on to win back-to-back Junior and U23 World Championships, and now the Giro Next Gen.

He could easily have gone to the WorldTour for the 2026 season, but why not honour the World Champion’s jersey, try to win the biggest races in it, and move up a year later when physically and mentally ready!

🇮🇹 Nel mondo dello sport d’élite, i piani cambiano troppo spesso a causa di imprevisti. Questo no, a parte due fratture e due interventi chirurgici. Ma come dice il proverbio: “Se frequenti un barbiere abbastanza a lungo, prima o poi ti taglierai i capelli”.

Il programma è stato concordato nel gennaio 2024: due partecipazioni al Giro Next Gen, alla L’Avenir e ai Campionati del Mondo prima di approdare al WorldTour.

Non avremmo mai immaginato che 2 anni e mezzo dopo Lollo avrebbe vinto due Campionati del Mondo Junior e Under 23 consecutivi, e ora anche il Giro Next Gen.

Avrebbe potuto tranquillamente passare al WorldTour per la stagione 2026, ma perché non onorare la maglia di campione del mondo, provare a vincere le corse più importanti con quella maglia e fare il salto di categoria un anno dopo, quando fisicamente e mentalmente pronto?
