I've done some amazing things in this life, but it's hard to top renesting raptors. This is the most special honour I have had in my life - being trusted to renest these beautiful creatures, and sharing it with my friends

ALWAYS ALWAYS check for nests when you're working!
You never truly know what's in hollows or at the tips of the tops of trees. Raccoons, squirrels, and birds of prey love these dense tops of conifers, as they provide much-needed cover and protection from predators. They keep themselves invisible for a reason!

Whether the species is protected or not, all wildlife have the right to live undisturbed and unharmed. Unfortunately, so many arborists aren't aware of even half of the species of wildlife they could possibly encounter on any given day or know where to look or what signs to look out for, which ends up displacing wildlife, or even killing them. A perfect example of this is these little Merlin, who are only about 5-6 inches, hiding all the way at the top of a Norway Spruce in the middle of a busy neighbourhood. Many species of raptor have adapted to new urban environments and use trees just like these to nest in. Mom flying around and sounding the alarm as I was climbing was the only indicator that they were here. If a tree like this was slated for a removal and could easily be dumped from the ground, these babies would have been ejected from the top without anyone knowing until it was too late.

Many companies have drones - let's make use of them! Binoculars are also a cheap alternative and easier to transport from job to job. Normalize looking out for the critters that call trees their home. Create a routine around checking for wildlife in every hollow and in every top you can before dumping trees to the ground. It could save a life or a few!

3rd Great Horned Owl renesting of the year - May 8, 2026
The owlet's finder is the gentleman who lives on the property. He was kind enough to climb a ladder and install a laundry basket in the tree and put the owlet back to keep it safe from predators . He then called Procyon to alert them. They then called me to assist with renesting the young owl. I lowered the owlet down to rehabber Sarah, who looked it over to check for any obvious signs of wing or head trauma. The little one seemed to be just fine, so Sarah cleared it for renesting. As I climbed, I heard an adult Great Horned Owl hooting not too far. It was evident that the parents were still very actively caring for their baby and they were monitoring it close by.

Once I climbed to where the nest was located, it was very obvious that the owlet outgrew the already-small nest, and Sarah had come prepared with a basket nest ready to install for occasions such as these. I installed the new nest and placed the baby owl in it, and reinforced it with zip ties to ensure it could not fall from the tree

We were confident that the baby would be cared for after we left, and we tasked the homeowner to monitor the nest for the parents.

Thank you Procyon for calling me to do this

Spoiler alert: I really need an angle grinder!

If you don't want to watch the reel, here it is in summary:

* I'm a Conservation Arborist from Ontario who specializes in tree preservation and wildlife habitat creation
* I use an angle grinder and a special auger called the Arborgrub to hollow out dead parts of trees to create housing for hollow-dependent wildlife
* I killed my first angle grinder that I bought for myself and I can't afford a new one
* Yes, I have looked on Marketplace for weeks, but I still can't afford this tool.
* The service I provide is for the benefit of the ecosystem. I do not accept monetary compensation for my wildlife services.
* I do this out of love. But love can't buy me a new angle grinder
* what I need to continue my work is a cordless 20V or higher volted angle grinder. If you know anyone who could generously donate one to me, please share this with them
* @makita.ca @milwaukeetool @dewalt_ca @ryobi_canada @boschtoolscanada @tegstools @princess_auto @atlasmachinery doesn't matter to me, I'm not looking for brand ambassadorship. But if you supply me with your tool, I will promote the heck out of you. I just want to get back to what I love
* most importantly, thank you to whoever you are for spreading this message out and thank you for being with me on this journey. Much love to you 🩶🩶 by @jaybizzie.rtc
