What an honor it is to represent my country on the biggest stage in the world! Growing up as a little kid, I would watch the Olympics and Paralympics on tv, questioning how they got to this level. I would dream that maybe someday I could be as amazing as them. I kept dreaming and dreaming, when people told me I’m crazy and my dream is crazy, it added to my fuel to keep pushing. At 19, I changed the the word “dream” into the word “reality”. Although it was only one day that changed it (4/3 - making the Paralympics) and a week of living it out (Paris), it has been a lifetime of dedication and hard work from both my family and I. Many have dreams but very few can achieve. I am proud I can stand here today able to say I made history. I wear the silver medal around my neck as a reminder that you can do anything you set your mind to and
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13

If I thanked everyone individually, I would never finish this post so thanks to everyone who has helped get me to this point. More specifically, I want to thank Moss Lattison, @abhitheshuttler, and @friscobadminton for the time and commitment you have spent helping us train. Thank you Miles for growing as a team with me. Most importantly, thank you to my close family and friends who have believed and supported me no matter what and for going through all the ups and downs with me.

For our second DAAA Sports Saturday, let’s meet Paralympian Jayci Simon.

Jayci is a U.S. Paralympic silver medalist, athlete, coach, and advocate from Michigan whose journey is rooted in resilience, community, and creating opportunities for others.

She began attending Little People of America (LPA) and DAAA in 2015, where her athleticism first caught the attention of others and eventually led to her being recruited to try badminton. In 2016, she picked up a racket for the first time and began playing in her grandparents’ backyard after her mother purchased a backyard badminton set. What started as a simple outdoor activity grew into a journey to the international stage.

With limited access to specialized coaching and resources in Michigan, Jayci built much of her training through determination, creativity, family support, and community. That persistence ultimately led her to represent Team USA and earn a Paralympic silver medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

But Jayci’s goals extend far beyond medals. She is passionate about creating opportunities for athletes with disabilities and helping young people discover that they do not have to give up the sports they love. She has founded and coached youth sports programs, created a high school badminton club, volunteered at adaptive sports camps, mentored young athletes all while being a college student and Paralympic athlete.

Whether competing internationally, coaching a young athlete, or advocating for greater inclusion, Jayci hopes to leave people with one message: you do not have to follow the path that already exists—you can create a new one, and then make it easier for those who come after you.

Every time I think about writing something, I’m left with 1,000 emotions. Sad, shocked, devastated, heartbroken, but I’m also filled with gratitude for being able to know you.

Pete was most commonly known as my boss but he had many more roles in my life. He was a mentor, a workout buddy, a personal cheerleader, and what felt like family.

He was always the one to call me out on stuff but he was just as much encouraging. He has taught me what it’s like to pay attention to the smallest details. The importance of knowing how many hours are in a week to prioritize your time most efficiently. To rain check me when he thought I was dreaming too big. He showed me the importance of putting others first no matter the cause.

And just when I thought I ate “weird” health concoctions, he somehow always had a “weirder” health habit. Eating a bowl of spirulina tablets is one of the many.

He had so many amazing qualities, but if I had to choose 1, it would be the way he made everyone around him feel important, loved, and cared for.

Although it’s devastating to have you leave us so soon, your impact on the people around you and your community will leave a legacy for years to come.

I love you and your terrible hand writing Pete🕊️🩷 by @jayci.simon
