For our second DAAA Sports Saturday, let’s meet Paralympian Jayci Simon. Jayci is a U.S. Paralympic silver medalist, athlete, coach, and advocate from Michigan whose journey is rooted in resilience, community, and creating opportunities for others. She began attending Little People of America (LPA) and DAAA in 2015, where her athleticism first caught the attention of others and eventually led to her being recruited to try badminton. In 2016, she picked up a racket for the first time and began playing in her grandparents’ backyard after her mother purchased a backyard badminton set. What started as a simple outdoor activity grew into a journey to the international stage. With limited access to specialized coaching and resources in Michigan, Jayci built much of her training through determination, creativity, family support, and community. That persistence ultimately led her to represent Team USA and earn a Paralympic silver medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. But Jayci’s goals extend far beyond medals. She is passionate about creating opportunities for athletes with disabilities and helping young people discover that they do not have to give up the sports they love. She has founded and coached youth sports programs, created a high school badminton club, volunteered at adaptive sports camps, mentored young athletes all while being a college student and Paralympic athlete. Whether competing internationally, coaching a young athlete, or advocating for greater inclusion, Jayci hopes to leave people with one message: you do not have to follow the path that already exists—you can create a new one, and then make it easier for those who come after you.
