True story, it’s time to retire this well loved mountain shirt. Also a true story, as of this past Saturday I’m at greater peace with the loss of Jeremy Fuerst. It was a difficult time for many. During the summer of 2021 the world was celebrating the burgeoning light at the end of a long and dark global pandemic. But the wounds of many lives lost were fresh.

I know everyone experiences loss differently. If I’m honest with myself, I recoiled and didn’t share how Jeremy’s accident in the mountains affected me. Climbing partnerships are an intimate and profoundly rewarding bond. As are mentor mentee relationships. As Jeremy’s mentor with the @mountaineersorg I felt as though I had failed him. At least I did then, when first hearing the news of him perishing in the Sangre de Cristo range of Colorado. I now no longer carry that burden, largely in part to the leadership of our dear friend Jeremy Benezra. From his interfaith eulogy at Fuerst’s memorial, to his fearless cathartic tears while atop summits together the past couple of years, and the endless supply of funny stories about Fuerst. Thank you for welcoming in the process of grief, through laughter, tears, and love.

On July 20th Jeremy Benezra, Javier Flores Gutierrez, and myself successfully climbed Mount Buckner. This peak was Jeremy Fuerst’s final WA State County High Point. We spread some of his ashes. I finally spoke my peace and ugly cried a bit. Climb on @fuerstjeremy taken in North Cascades National Park by @jayhpea

The Hunter Full moon was our why. Our how reminded me the blessings of such beautiful country out our back door. Slept in. Did some chores around the house. @sasprea and I didn’t leave Seattle until late afternoon. Caught the sunset and moon rise from Chinook pass with Tahoma keeping watch. Dinner in Yakima. Crashed out at our favorite spot in the canyon. Jupiter kept the moon company high in the night sky. Water bottles froze. Domino kept our toes warm. Come morning, I salvaged the firewood from the drunk who left after not getting their fire going the night before, 12 pack cardboard include. Coffee on the suspension bridge leading to Umtanum. Lunch in Ellensburg. Raible calling the throwback game. Larches, cloud show, and the Stuart Range from Redtop Lookout. Spooky garage rock brought us home. taken in Chinook Pass, Washington by @jayhpea

The newly replaced foot bridge over Eureka Creek is a sight to behold. Last weekend I celebrated my birthday with some quality time with myself in the mountains. Having spent last season committed to supporting others in the alpine, my time chasing #bulgerlist peaks took the back burner. Not to mention work as of late. It was a glorious return. Lake Mountain and Monument Peak makes 69 out of 100 for me. While I had Lost Peak as an alternate add on for my itinerary two peaks was enough to fill my cup. Along with lake side naps, skinny dipping, taking voice memos of bird songs and playing it back to them, full moon gazing, and other important work. taken in Pasayten Wilderness by @jayhpea

A little over a year ago now, I took a leap of faith. I left a dream job and an amazing team at @rei. I did so with the desire to continue to help others spend time outside. More specifically, to explore how I might do my work closer to the point of recreation. To test the hypothesis that the future of outdoor retail is at the trailhead, at the put-in, at the crag, or pretty dang close. That the buying of things is in service to the activity, not the activity itself. Yes, it’s a hotel lobby. But it’s also a place to plan, buy, try, fuel up before, and celebrate after memorable adventures. This photo is from November 15, 2021. Lots of hard work by many have made this place what it is now. Our @field.stn staff will continue to evolve what is possible. #stayouthere taken in Field Station Moab by @jayhpea

Went up hill last Sunday. It’s been a while…. Jeremy and I were below the clouds for the majority of the day. Starting at the Annette Lake trailhead around 8 AM, walked the mostly snow free road to the summer trail head, and put on snowshoes a couple hundred vertical feet from there. Reasonable views of the mountain loop group and the low reaches of the Sound. Mt. Pilchuck's westerly position makes for some dramatic views of our salty waters. So close it seems like you should be able to smell it. We ran the westerly ridge starting off trail around 4K, keeping directly on this arm or just south of its crest to the saddle at 4600. The approaching storm didn't manifest until we were atop the summit. Snowfall came just as we crawled into the look out for a break. A nice shelter in its winterized state. A hot box hard to leave. Descended the summer trail for a bit from the 4600 ft saddle. Around 4300 we dropped off trail in a generally northerly direction and picked up the spur trail that stays east of Rotary Creek. I suspect most of this terrain would be less than savory with out snow cover. Back at the summer trailhead, snowfall soon turned to rain making for a very wet road walk. Back to the car around 6:30ish.

This outing was a nice return to the mountains with excellent company. Sad to say it's been far too long since I've had a legitimate pack on my back. Last season was cut short by some family matters and a pesky injury I just can't seem to shake. Slowly, getting back out there again. taken in Mount Pilchuck by @jayhpea

Half way there team… Just now reliving the views from atop Koma Kulshan. Thanks to a solid mentored lead via @pcokus we made it up and down safely. Stoked to get out with you all this weekend in WA Pass for some alpine rock climbing and dare I say some @mountaineersorg basic alpine climbing graduation climbs! #ourpnw taken in Koma Kulshan Ranger Station by @jayhpea
