“Welcome to the Cascades”, JP uttered as we cut through the dense understory enroute to Mt. Chiwawa. A temperate rainforest indeed. The path obscured by electric green ferns and assemblage of mountain wildflowers: yarrow, Indian paintbrush, lupine, tiger lillies. JP could name most of them as if they were old friends returning after a long slumber.

Here these relatively young Cascades reach upward, not as tall as their older neighbors the Sierra and Rocky ranges, but expansive and foreboding. Active volcanos dot the landscape. Rainer looms large. Mountain air does something to the soul. It opens you up. On the fall line we fall into a meditative state, partly out of necessity for self preservation. Each step is intentional, rythmic, and reassuring. An ice axe is your friend: know how to use it. Perhaps that’s why so many seek to bag the peaks year after year. It’s the good kind of escapism, one that grabs hold of you and places you in context of millions of years of quiet work and humble growth toward the heavens.

As JP looks off in the distance he retraces his steps: Sinister, Clark, Glacier Peak, Seven Fingered Jack. Like old friends they look back, as if to beckon him on to the next one — number 72.
