On stage tonight opening for Missy Higgins right next to the iconic Sydney Opera House, Ruby Rodgers opened for the music legend. In her band was my son Tana, who had also accompanied this young songstress as she performed at the John Farnham Tribute concert at the Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne recently. I know my wife, family and I are so proud of my son Tana as he forges new paths in his quest to carve out his own career. He has so many role models to look up to and big thanks must go to @mahaliabarnes for believing in him and entrusting him with this opportunity. Big thanks goes out to Saveatama Eroni Clarke MNZM, Pasifika Engagement Manager – New Zealand Rugby and All Black #919 for balancing the ledger and sending me the colours of my childhood dream team. A couple of months back Eroni and Julian Savea and Portia Woodman-Wickliffe presented the Rock, Dwayne Johnson @therock and my daughter @catherinelagaaia with an All Black jersey. I wasn’t angry, just disappointed. Ha! My daughter happily paraded the jersey in front of me and I refused to engage. Months later, she surprised me with my very own and with our family name on the back. I won’t lie, I quickly looked for my rugby boots just in case they needed me on the chicken wing. Ha! But there is peace now in the Laga’aia household. The other one is the toaster scenario. When there’s a long lingering look off at the end of a scene, where the camera slowly tracks into your face or the music swells before a blackout transition in stage. Just think these 3 things. 1. Did I leave the toaster on? 2. ( Pause, ) I DID, I DID leave the toaster on! 3. ( Intake of breath, ) No, no I turned it off. As a father of 4 daughters and 4 sons, you realise very early on that with boys, you can treat them like a footy team. You gather them in one place and give them all the same instructions. Wash the dishes. NOW! Whether they follow the instructions is another story, but with my daughters… you have to have more than one individual conversation with them and sometimes using different approaches. Humour… You’ll never guess what I saw!happened. Fear.. I wouldn’t eat the rest of that cake. Bribery… if I give you $20 will you do the dishes. I guess this is how you Succeed in Business without really trying. Congratulations to everyone involved. You get a full production, singing and dancing all on a postage stamp of a stage and yet, like Doctor Who’s Tardis, the Hayes Theatre seems larger and roomier. I want to send a big shout out to my son Tana who will be playing on stage tonight at the Rod Laver Arena for the John Farnham Tribute Concert. He will be supporting the wonderfully talented Ruby Rodgers, daughter of Mahalia Barnes and granddaughter of rock legend Jimmy Barnes. Everyone in my household knows that when you book a show, you must get two show posters signed by the cast. One for the family house and one for your own house when you move out. Today, for my 63rd Birthday, my beautiful son Tana gifted me a signed poster of a show we both did this year called The Pirates of Penzance. A Gilbert and Sullivan classic. I was also surprised to see that his wonderful girlfriend Lauren, actually had a signed poster of Hadestown in which my other son and late with his Hamilton poster, Iosefa had worked on. Tana took it to Officeworks and got a happy made for my walks.
