would not usually share videos of readings like so (it’s a you-had-to-be-there-with-me kinda complex), but am againalways remembering the call of purpose, role-making, and the sublimation of mourning.

we are forced to see the inferno of violence & little me believes we should recall the carvings of rain in our mouths.

This past weekend, I had the honor—alongside @thecanteenkilla and @syldubenion—of opening the night with a reading of works by Cuban poet and friend Nancy Morejón, as well as one of my own originals. The evening was keynoted by Bruno Rodríguez, Cuba’s Foreign Minister, who, at the High-Level Segment of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, continued to denounce both the genocide in Palestine and the U.S. blockade and sanctions on the Cuban people.

The night was hued by historic developments: the passing of Assata Shakur, the centennials of both Malcolm X & Fidel, the movement in the streets against Netanyahu’s visit to the UN, the ongoing genocide in Palestine, and the relentless blockade against Cuba.

What do these markers demand of us? A call to action. An insistence that internationalism guide the struggle against white supremacy and capitalism at home. How would history remember Assata Shakur without Cuba? How will we struggle for a free Palestine? How will we build and tend to our future—how will we construct socialism, the vision Assata fought for, and the only viable alternative to the violence of the present system?

The choice is ultimately ours and ours alone. taken in New York, New York by @jaylentstrong

On Saturday @lowsupply & I had a great honor to perform a poem for Voices for Peace • Cuba is Not a Threat which hosted Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez and a powerful program in solidarity with Cuba.

The room was filled with hundreds of activists, organizers, and cultural workers who all demand an end to the U.S. blockade and the unending threats against Cuban sovereignty by the government and specifically the Trump administration.

The situation in Cuba is dire and yet people continually persist and fight through unimaginable conditions in one of the world’s silent wars that is resulting in a slow and long genocide. To defend Cuba is to defend humanity and poetry is one small act of invigoration to those who fight and struggle together wherever the call of solidarity is a collective one for peace. taken in New York, New York by @jaylentstrong

KINDRED BUSINESS is out on all streaming now!

This collaborative project between @canteenkilla & myself started with some sessions in October 2024. We were a year into this latest and contemporary iteration of the genocide in Palestine and we wrote and produced the song COVE. I wanted to have a song that was robust and heavy and strange and yet above all else full of revolutionary optimism.

“Tell the story once I’ll tell it again, glory to the martyrs they gon live again” are the opening candor to this project. Or “I can never say a pain is mine alone.”

When I, we, say martyr we relate to a particular culture but we also categorize into the disbelief of loss, we might invoke, say, Hind Rajab. Or we might invoke say, Anas Al-Sharif. Or we might invoke say, Dutty Boukman. Or say, Che. Or say; sister, or brother, or mother, or father, or friend, or comrade. And I think there we open up what we know - - that the threat to life’s beauty and longevity is the viciousness of death from capitalism, one could argue then, all death is wielded by capital’s violent posture towards all life.

So death then, is a thing we must beat back.

Song & incantation & rap in this way then is a call to action. We only really are inviting you into actually refusing the conditions and fighting for the new world. I hope the music, the brevity of some of the stories whether personal in grief and jubilance or broad in their reach are doing what art should do.

HAPPY HOUR is the final track on KINDRED BUSINESS

KINDRED BUSINESS is a collaborative project between @canteenkilla & @jaylentstrong • released previously for Bandcamp Friday — ❗️available on all streaming platforms Friday, September 18th❗️

It’s been many years since I’ve released a body of music in any capacity. It’s a great honor to do so with ease and focus alongside a friend—combining our stories and great vigor to want to reach out and commune with others especially with this cherished and strange thing that is rap music.

Above all else I think I hope to be useful, relatable, and a part of the class struggle. I hope to be a bard in that context of necessary change, a poet in many different capacities. I hope always to be a steward to others.
