Most founders I talk to believe employment law starts at 15 employees. In Illinois, it starts at one.

The Illinois Human Rights Act has covered employers with a single employee since 2020. Since January 1, HB 3773 covers the software those employers hire with. If AI helps decide who gets hired, promoted, or disciplined, you have to tell people, and it can't be used in a way that discriminates against a protected class. The state's draft rules on what that notice must say were put on hold in June, but the notice requirement is already law.

Illinois keeps leading on AI policy. Here's where the major bills stand.

HB 3773, AI in hiring: passed the House 106 to 0 and the Senate 57 to 0. Signed in August 2024 and in effect since January 1, 2026.

HB 1806, no AI therapy: passed the House 105 to 0 and the Senate 56 to 0. Signed in August 2025.

SB 315, the AI Safety Measures Act: passed the Senate 52 to 5 and the House 110 to 0. Signed in July 2026. Illinois is now the first state to require annual third-party audits of the largest AI developers, starting in 2028.

SB 317, chatbot disclosure: passed the Senate 56 to 1 in May and is waiting in the House. If it becomes law, a business would have to tell you at the start of a chat that you're talking to an automated system, not a person.

How to install Claude AI in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

I kept copying text out of Word, pasting it into Claude, then pasting the answer back. That whole habit is over. Claude runs inside the Office apps now, and one install covers Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Outlook installs separately.
What I cover in this video:

1. Where the Claude add-in lives in Word and how to install it
2. How to sign in, and why you check that the two codes match first
3. The permissions screen, and what you agree to when you click Authorize
4. What Claude can do once it is inside your documents and spreadsheets

The setting almost nobody turns on is cross-app work. Once it is on, Claude pulls a number out of your Excel model and drops it into a Word memo or a slide for you. It works on Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans.

Earlier this week I hosted Claude Community Chicago Build Day for Fable 5.1, and 90+ people showed up to Ferris & Co ready to go!

We took a look at what’s new in the model and two live demos, and then everyone had about an hour to build something on it. 15 teams signed up to show what they made and a panel of five local judges scored every build.

Within about an hour, teams had working builds up on the big screen in front of a full room. I serve with one philosophy “to be a solution in a world full of problems,” and putting these tools in people’s hands is the fastest way I know to do that.

Congratulations to Team Storm Ready on the best team build, an app that tracks the whole arc of a storm, and the team prize from Anthropic. And congratulations to,Skyline Project, a living 3D Chicago you can explore and add your own building to, on the best individual build. His prize is two tickets to the Obama Presidential Center.

Claude Fable 5.1 came out September 1st, and I’m getting the same questions that comes with every release: do I need to switch?

I spent Wednesday afternoon in iHeart studio cohosting The Brunch Bunch with my brother @marseilactionjackson, sitting in for Tamera Fair while she takes some time with her family. Sending her all our love.

We got into: Chicago closing out last year with 416 homicides — the fewest since 1965 — and what that number actually means for the neighborhoods carrying the most of it. The heat wave that showed up out of nowhere. And the Cuban immigrants ICE deported to Africa, a country they’ve never set foot in, with no passports and no way home.
Heavy conversations. The kind worth having on the record.

Then we got into something lighter — Hillman College is back. A Different World returns September 24th on Netflix, 39 years after the original, this time following Whitley and Dwayne’s daughter as she starts her freshman year. Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer and Jada Pinkett Smith are all back, Debbie Allen directed the premiere, and Brandy is singing the theme song. I’m not going to pretend I’m playing it cool about that one!

I remember the theme song word-for-word so I will be watching and singing along.

Grateful for the mic, grateful for the seat. 🎙️

You don’t have to be a senior developer to build an AI agent. I built mine on a random Tuesday and I didn’t write a single line of code.

New episode of The Download. Here’s what’s in it:

→ The difference between a chatbot and an agent — a chatbot answers you, an agent goes and does the work

→ Step 1: open Claude Desktop and point it at a folder on your own computer
→ Step 2: write its job description. Be specific — vague instructions get you vague results
→ Step 3: build a team. Agents can hand work to other agents. Mine has a chief of staff that keeps up with the rest
→ Step 4: put it on a schedule so it runs every week without you asking

I Spent last Friday in the co-host chair at iHeartRadio’s the Brunch Bunch alongside my brother @marseilactionjackson.

I filled in for Tamera Fair, who laid her mother to rest that day. Tamera, we were holding you the entire time, keeping you and your family in our thoughts and prayers.

Our guest was Dr. Julian Wright, CEO of The Dee Foundation and grandson of the legendary Merri Dee, the WGN-TV anchor, trailblazer and community advocate whose work shaped Chicago broadcasting and whose legacy is still doing the work.

Dr. Wright came to talk about the Dee Foundation Awards Ceremony, a night honoring leaders making a difference in our communities, held on what would have been Merri Dee’s birthday. Friday, October 30 at Michelle’s Ballroom, doors open at 6pm, ceremony at 7pm, with a special guest appearance by actor Barry Brewer of Tyler Perry’s Bruh on BET. Tickets on Eventbrite. We also learned that Mr. Action Jackson himself is going to be receiving an award for his work on air at the Brunch Bunch!

What stayed with me is how Dr. Wright talks about legacy. Not as something you preserve behind glass, but as something you keep building. That is exactly what the foundation is doing.
