Behind the scenes of ‘HULL’ — a short film brought to life in less than 24 hours. It was shot in April and premiered on May 2nd at @thetakeoffbyalohaterminal

I had the privilege of watching an incredibly talented crew transform our backyard 🪄 into a stunning movie set. It just felt breathtaking & surreal. I’m still in awe of their vision, their artistry, and their beautiful way of telling a story. My heart still skips a beat when I rewatch these clips (which actually doesn’t do it justice.)

“Look son! Everything the light touches on the Disney Destiny is our kingdom”

Man this brings back so many incredibly feelings. From our audition (which I can’t wait to share with you) to our voice over auditions and here Brave was just the cutest.

You would not believe how crazy it was to get to Florida 🤣 we were headed the airport to go to Fort Lauderdale and we got a call “your flight’s been cancelled”. We were in a panic “ummmm ship sets sail in like 2 days”. Hawaii to Florida seemed easy enough but we ended up having to take a detour from Hawaii to California to Chicago to Fort Lauderdale and it was exciting even tho stressful.

Did I mention on the day of boarding we couldn’t find our passport which is a MUST to board 🤣

Everything worked out and this was the result. Mahalo @disneycruiseline @disney.destiny @disneyaulani @disneyplus @disney @disneyvacationclub and our agent @bctalentmgmt and the production team of @barkbark for making Disney dreams come true!

Sweet beginnings. 🤍

This was one of the first self-tapes I filmed for @julesandbrave, back in April 2024. Brave had just turned 5.

@dannycasler normally handled all of the talent work — auditions, emails with our agent @kathymulleragency & casting, bookings, paperwork, all of it. But he happened to be away on a surf trip that day, so there I was, Googling:

“What is a slate?” 🫪
“What does ‘slate your name’ mean?”

The kids and I had no idea what we were doing. I didn’t know how to frame an audition, how clean the audio needed to be, where the lights should go… and even with my photography background, I felt completely out of my element.

They didn’t get a callback for this one, but that hardly mattered. They were so little, and I was just trying to get the tapes to Danny in time.

What I didn’t know then was how much these little auditions would change the shape of my days.

I had stepped away from freelance photography after Brave was born. My camera was boxed up, my studio lights had found a new purpose, and by 2024 I was mostly working with an iPhone and a laptop.

Now, our home is slowly filling back up with cameras, lights, audio equipment, sides and self-tapes — and Danny and I are building a little dual-purpose studio for the kids’ work and his music.

And sometimes I catch myself looking at all of it and think…

🎥 Alma’s Second Act — This was a very special night at @hiffhawaii Wednesdays at Consolidated Ward. 🤍

On September 16th, we celebrated @michelle.umipeg’s “Alma’s Second Act” (an HFC @hifilmmakers Pitch-winning short film) which she wrote, directed, and executive produced. Jules was so honored to be cast by Michelle as Angelica, sharing scenes and lines with Maila Rondero. This was also Jules’ first time seeing herself on the big screen (in a theater), and watching her excitement throughout the evening was something we’ll always remember. She loved spotting everyone she knew from set, meeting other filmmakers and actors, and being part of the Q&A with some of the cast and crew.

Even with a few technical delays during the screening, we were simply grateful to be there and share in such a meaningful milestone for Michelle and everyone who brought this story to life.

Congratulations, Michelle, on your first theater screening! 🤍 And congratulations to the entire cast and crew.

What a memorable night! We absolutely loved it. 🎬

I tried to fit an incredible night of @journeyofficial into 30 seconds… but some moments simply ask for more time.

So here are 2 minutes and 36 seconds from my POV with ♾️ @dannycasler, @julesandbrave, and my parents. 🩶

Life and time work in mysterious ways, and how we got here { watching Journey together } is Danny’s story to tell. But from where I’m sitting… @rbpconcerts 🙏🏽 thank you for the invitation, for all the heart and soul you put into your work behind the scenes, and for creating moments like this for everyone else to experience.

I’m still taking it all in. I’m still watching these videos, smiling, laughing at Brave falling asleep during a legendary set, and also holding this close to me knowing what this will mean for me years from now. 🥹

This particular weekend somehow felt like an entire month had passed. Everything was moving so quickly, yet I experienced it so slowly—almost as if time stretched just enough for me to really be present. Music has a way of carrying us through our own lives.

Watching Journey play live { twice } felt incredibly nostalgic. My parents grew up on this music. It’s part of my childhood. I’d have never guessed that decades later, I would be standing at a concert with them, listening to those same songs come alive.

Our days have never been especially predictable. Plans get moved, cancelled, rearranged… and somehow, we’ve learned to be okay with that. We’ve adapted. Although I do love a good routine, a life with @dannycasler has taught me that there isn’t one roadmap meant for everyone. It took me a long time to understand that.

The older I get, the more I find myself consciously choosing what matters, staying close to my kids, nurturing the good things, letting go of what doesn’t serve us, and accepting that we’re always evolving.

There’s a lot of our life that never makes it to the grid. Our reality is a little more unconventional than it may look from the outside, and honestly, I’ve grown to love that about us. Today looks like recording a voiceover for my daughter, shoveling dirt from a pump system, housework, animals, a little gardening… and somehow, a print project I randomly signed myself up for this week that I’m already behind in. Somewhere in between all of that, plans will probably change again.

We’ve become pretty good at embracing both the adventures and the non-adventures. @julesandbrave know that our life may look a little different from the lives around them, and through all of their experiences, we hope they learn that it’s okay to create a life that “feels right for you — rather than trying to fit into someone else’s”; it’s what I tell myself, too.

P.S. This moon footage was taken August 29th. 🌕 J&B had taken a spontaneous evening dip in the stream, and when I got home from spending some time with a friend at her event, I had wondered, “When is moonrise?” Because we had been talking about watching the moonrise. The kids jumped out of the stream, took a quick shower, and we raced down to the dock to see if we could catch it. We did.

When life feels crazy and you feel like you need to retune your life… go outside and check out the moon.

Despite Jules being cast in multiple Hawaiʻi short films and commercial projects, she had surprisingly only done one in-person callback for a film… until recently.

We received a last minute short-film audition opportunity, with less than 8 hours to memorize and rehearse several scenes. I rehearsed with her, we did the best we could, showed up, and she delivered. 🤍 It ended up being one of the most incredible experiences for her to work with a director. Regardless of the outcome, we left that day high-fiving. We gave it our all, and we did it together. 🤞🏽

As we left the location, Jules jumped up and down and said, “That was so fun!” (Our golden rule: “We stop when it’s no longer fun.”)

I’m still in awe and truly so proud of her. After every audition, we have a celebratory treat (dessert) or meal. This time we went to Tanaka Ramen & Izakaya 🍜

I’m amazed not just by @julesandbrave, but by all the kids who are actively auditioning and working as actors. To have that kind of work ethic, desire, and commitment at such a young age takes so much self-discipline, dedication, and support from parents, peers, teachers, and an entire film crew.

We put so much faith in these kids to help “carry” a project. And at the end of the day, they’re still kids. We can’t forget that.

This afternoon Jules asked me, “Can you push me on the swing, pretty please?” And then tonight before bed, she watched America’s Got Talent and asked me, “Can I play with my slime?” — A little reminder that 8 years old is still an age of wonder. 💫 by @jaymibritten

Earlier this month, Danny surprised Jules & Brave and took us to the Keep It Aloha Card Show at SALT. 🤍

Our kids have been collecting Pokémon cards for a few years now. I still remember when they were 5 and 6 and could barely read the cards. Now, they have binders full of them and somehow know far more about Pokémon than I ever expected to learn.

As a mama, I’ve always tried to take an interest in the things my kids love. I want to understand their little worlds, even when they’re completely foreign to me. I once tried learning how to actually play Pokémon, but after an hour of reading the instructions, I accepted that collecting the cards was probably more my speed. Over time, I’ve become fascinated by the cards—the artwork, the rarity, the stories behind them, and the excitement that comes with finding something special.

I don’t want to be the mom who simply watches from the sidelines or ignores their hobby completely. I want to remain curious with them, learn alongside them, and share in the things that make them happy. One of my favorite parts of collecting in Hawaiʻi has been the community. There is so much kindness and genuine excitement shared between people who simply love these cards.

At the show, Eric from @keireicards gifted my kids an entire box of cards to “rip” before closing. We kept asking if he was sure and offered to pay him, but he wouldn’t accept anything. He simply wanted to share in their excitement. Those are the moments I want to remember. I think that’s one of the reasons I love documenting our life so much. Sometimes a photograph or a little video becomes more than a memory of what we did—it becomes a way of remembering how someone made us feel.

Grateful for kind people, good community, and the little worlds our kids invite us into. Until the next Pokémon event. 🤍
