In 2010 a composer from Brussels reached out to Magik having heard about us from Adam Wiltzie of Stars of the Lid, who had heard of us from his friend Volker aka Hauschka. The composer was Christina Vantzou, a former visual artist about to transition into music and make her first album.

Her music was like nothing I’d ever been asked to collaborate on. The sketches were like floating clouds of harmony with no sense of pulse or bars. There was an unhurried timelessness to the music which almost didn’t feel like music to me when I first heard it. It felt more like colors or scents that just kind of bloomed in and out. Christina asked if I might collaborate with her on her debut album, adding orchestral colors and shapes where I felt inspired. After many months of sending demos back and forth between the Mission and Brussels we recorded her album at @tiny.telephone in 2011. It was the start of a long musical friendship and a kindred connection still going today.

Magik is honored to perform the first track off her debut album @grayareaorg on Sept 26th. The track, Homemade Mountains, was the first piece I ever heard of Christina’s and holds a dear place in my heart. To pay homage to how I experience her music, we will be performing off colored graphic scores instead of traditional music. It’s how I’ve always visualized Christina’s music and when you hear the performance on Sept 26th, I think you’ll agree this just makes sense.
