REPOST from @Flotation_Device_KBCS:
Music inspired by paintings is a recurring theme tonight as we wrap up our Earshot Jazz Festival coverage with Myra Melford’s Splash trio, which takes its name and motivation from Cy Twombly’s brash canvases. An unusually meek Peter Maxwell Davies orchestral work takes Paul Klee as its starting point—we’ll celebrate its 50th anniversary while contrasting it to Gunther Schuller’s contemporaneous Klee Studies that once factored into a notorious episode in @SeattleSymphony’s long history…a history that continues with Ludovic_Morlot’s return after a year’s absence to conduct music by Samuel Adams. Quinsin Nachoff harkens back to Gunther Schuller’s Third Stream initiative with a new album of hybrid large-ensemble compositions, while Denis Dufour channels Beethoven in an acousmatic foray and DoYeon Kim brings her 25-string gayageum to Earshot Jazz for an evening of duets with Cuong Vu. George Crumb’s Dream Sequence—which brought his classic period to a close—gets a 50-year celebration while its echoes reverberate in David Shea’s latest fixed-media anthology.

Sunday, October 18, 10pm–Midnight PDT (GMT -7), on 91.3 @KBCS Bellevue/Seattle/Tacoma (streaming at KBCS.FM). Available in podcast format (with HQ audio) at Mixcloud.com. Creative and improvised music from the Northwest and around the world with host Mike Schell.

In 2010 a composer from Brussels reached out to Magik having heard about us from Adam Wiltzie of Stars of the Lid, who had heard of us from his friend Volker aka Hauschka. The composer was Christina Vantzou, a former visual artist about to transition into music and make her first album.

Her music was like nothing I’d ever been asked to collaborate on. The sketches were like floating clouds of harmony with no sense of pulse or bars. There was an unhurried timelessness to the music which almost didn’t feel like music to me when I first heard it. It felt more like colors or scents that just kind of bloomed in and out. Christina asked if I might collaborate with her on her debut album, adding orchestral colors and shapes where I felt inspired. After many months of sending demos back and forth between the Mission and Brussels we recorded her album at @tiny.telephone in 2011. It was the start of a long musical friendship and a kindred connection still going today.

Magik is honored to perform the first track off her debut album @grayareaorg on Sept 26th. The track, Homemade Mountains, was the first piece I ever heard of Christina’s and holds a dear place in my heart. To pay homage to how I experience her music, we will be performing off colored graphic scores instead of traditional music. It’s how I’ve always visualized Christina’s music and when you hear the performance on Sept 26th, I think you’ll agree this just makes sense.

Magik loves you @christinavantzou ! Thank you for all these years of friendship and collaboration ❤️❤️

Only 30ish tixx left for SF’s first orchestra sleepover show. Grab one at the link in bio. Code HAPPY18MAGIK for 20% off 💤💤💤
