After many years of working on this book, and The King’s Pride Saga as a whole, Echoes of the Past now marks the start of my journey as a published author, and I’m genuinely speechless…

So I’ll keep it short. Thank you to all those who joined me on this journey. Know I truly treasure each and every one of you so incredibly much. Welcome to Westeros . . . I mean Weckenstone!

JBJ’s debut fantasy novel took me right back to those Sunday nights excitedly waiting for this iconic song to start. Waiting for the map to reveal our newest hints and the story to pull me in. While this world is entirely its own, it does contain the same epic scale and sense of wonder I experienced as I watched GOT.

So if you’re like me and you have a giant hole in your fantasy loving heart, allow me to introduce you to Echoes of the Past. I have a feeling you’ll be swept away just as I was.

Last week I had the honour of doing a speaker event together with my good writer friend, Timo Whistler, for Utrecht University, in collaboration with Meet the Makers!😍
Now, those that follow me closely know I recently graduated from Utrecht University, so to suddenly stand on the other side of the lecture hall was both strange, slightly intimidating, but mostly super cool!!😅

I tell you, I had loads of fun with this one!! The students were intrigued, asked interesting questions, and engaged in a manner that made me only want to keep going! A fun coincidence is also that September is the national writing month in the Netherlands, so it really felt like the stars aligned here✨

More importantly, though, was that I could provide some insights (together with Timo) as to the journey of publishing a book. I used to scour the internet for advice, watching lectures from Brandon Sanderson, writer’s blogs, and much more to understand what I had to do.
To now fulfil a role, to the best of my abilities, that I wished I had to my disposal when I was in an earlier phase of my writing career was incredibly special. And I can only hope to have inspired some students to keep writing to one day publish their works, while relating to them the complexities of this field :)

In any case, this was sick! Definitely an event I’m proud. Thank you, Timo, Utrecht University, and Meet the Makers for this one!!🫶🫶

FULL DISCLAIMER: I’m actually really happy and supporting you with any amount of books you’re reading. In today’s age, especially for my generation, any amount of reading = “Great job, keep at it!!😍”

Buuuuuut, it’s still fun to joke about the crazy differences in books read throughout a year! Some people can really marinate, while others go through them like hot cakes😅

For those that know me, I’m not necessarily a fast reader. Not slow either, but I like to reread a line, make a note, and generally take my time (especially with fantasy). I do try to read as much as I can, averaging in the last two/three years around 40-50ish books, of greatly varying lengths of course🙌
Although even that number changes, as I notice I’m reading more voraciously now that I don’t have assigned uni readings detailing the decline of democracy around the world…🫠

Anyways, how many books do you usually read in a year?? Contrary to the video, no shame found here in this comment section (except if it’s 0… then there will be some gentle encouraging…)❓💬

Earlier this week, JBJ Writes and I returned to UU for a Meet the Makers session to talk about something we’ve both learned a lot about over the past year: writing a fantasy novel and figuring out the strange world of self-publishing.

I absolutely loved the crowd. There were some great (and critical!) questions, a whole bunch of genuinely interested students, and even a few aspiring authors in the room working on stories of their own.

Getting to talk openly about what worked, what didn’t, and everything we wish we’d known before publishing our first books was such a fun experience.

Hopefully, we inspired at least a few of you to keep writing. Your book isn’t going to finish itself! 😉

Hey, listen, I’m as much of a lore-nerd as the next fantasy fan. Truly. But don’t do it in the middle of my character-driven chapter😭

Seriously, lore can be incredibly interesting, but it takes skill to convey it naturally and in an interesting manner, especially one relevant to the characters…
And when that is missing, an interesting piece of world-building can quickly turn into a lore-dump that lessens the immersion🫠

Now let it be known that I never skip those pages!! I read them! The author’s work has gone into them, and there’s always nuggets of gold in there. But, sometimes, I do just wanna turn that page to the next section with more characters again😂

What’s your opinion on lore-dumps? Love ‘em? Find them boring? Or somewhere in the middle like me?❓
