✨ Indie excellence - Part 1 ✨

I couldn’t fit all the books I wanted to in 🙈 So another part will be coming soon. Here’s some indie books which I LOVE. Some are scheduled for re-read over the coming months.

Some of the best books I’ve ever read have been written by indie authors. The stories are fresh, the action is actioning and the spice is moistening. 💦

Next time you decide to pick up some books, why not add an indie author into the mix, you won’t be disappointed. ✨

Earlier this week, JBJ Writes and I returned to UU for a Meet the Makers session to talk about something we’ve both learned a lot about over the past year: writing a fantasy novel and figuring out the strange world of self-publishing.

I absolutely loved the crowd. There were some great (and critical!) questions, a whole bunch of genuinely interested students, and even a few aspiring authors in the room working on stories of their own.

Getting to talk openly about what worked, what didn’t, and everything we wish we’d known before publishing our first books was such a fun experience.

Hopefully, we inspired at least a few of you to keep writing. Your book isn’t going to finish itself! 😉

And a big thank you to @utrechtuniversity @transmissioninmotion_uu and Meet the Makers for having us!

🍂 𝐀𝐔𝐓𝐔𝐌𝐍 𝐁𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐒 🍂

Look, I might not enjoy autumn vibes irl, but I adore autumn vibes in books, so of course I had to join all the thousands of other people in recommending all my seasonal faves for any type of mood (mostly with a focus on the magical, mystical & fantastical vibes tho). Here’s to romanticizing the hell out of this hellish season, I guess? ✨️

Now, I tried to mostly highlight some of my fave underhyped books, because we all know I love me some hidden gems, but I also mixed in some more popular ones that I think are totally worth the hype. Sooo, have fun building your delulu autumn TBR, hope some of these make it on there! 🧡

Do make sure to keep some spots open for the spooky season thriller & horror reads though, because I am coming back soon with a whole lot of dark & disturbing reads to satisfy your creepy cravings. You can thank (or curse?) me later 🤭

Join us in this upcoming conversation with writers JBJ (Julius Benjamin Jonker) and Timo Whistler (Timo Fluitsma) on self-publishing.

• Date: Wednesday 23 September 2026
• Time: 13:15-15:00
• Location: Drift 25 Room 002
• RSVP via the link in the bio🔝

In this Meet the Makers event (a collaboration with the MA Literature Today), we welcome two writers and UU alumni, JBJ (Julius Benjamin Jonker) and Timo Whistler (Timo Fluitsma), who have recently self-published their debut fantasy novels. JBJ’s Echoes of the Past centers on two twins, heirs to the monarchy of Weckenstone, who must reconcile with their family’s dark history, their own magical powers, and each other. Timo’s The Way of the World is set in the Arcanum, a magical university, where a boy named Cinder seeks mastery over transmutation.

JBJ and Timo will read from their novels, as well as discuss their inspirations (including those connected to their studies and research at UU), their writing processes, the benefits and challenges of self-publishing, the various ways they find and connect to readers, and the function and value of reviews, whether on Goodreads or in established publications.

More info in the bio🔝

Meet the Makers is a series by The Creative Humanities Academy, a platform that fosters collaboration and knowledge exchange between cultural and creative professionals and academic researchers and students.

And we are finally here! I’ve been excitedly waiting to review echoes of the past for a while now and can say for absolute certain that it has lived up to my expectations. @jbj_writes has done a wonderful job with the first book in the kings pride saga and I am now avidly waiting to see when the next book releases. The characters and world both have drawn me in, I’ve been loving the inclusion of random historical texts, and the variance of magic and character backgrounds makes for a wonderfully complicated read! Go check this one out!

EDEN is out now in paperback, E book and on KU 🖤

It’s not all horror, sci-fi and dystopian, there is a love story in there too and it’s one of my favourite elements throughout the whole book!🙂‍↕️

For those who are new, hey, I’m Kylo Kirby and my debut dystopian horror novel EDEN is out now. EDEN is a dystopian, end of the world horror book set in Wyoming. It follows our main character Jax as he tries to save his daughter from a hostile government faction in a world that’s overrun by aggressive, mutated animals. This book battles grief, love, heartbreak and terror as we explore the new world and what nightmares hunt within it. But in the ashes of mankind, a monster can wear many skins.

If this sounds like a something you’ll like, go check it out now (link in my bio) 👀🖤
