Sound on! This new super 8 film features a special score by composer Dani Shivers (@danishivers), a musician whose hauntingly beautiful work I’ve long admired and who created the perfect atmosphere for this piece. The cemetery viewed here in static vignettes on a blustery early spring day is emblematic of changing and growing needs from a longstanding community in northern NM, standing as a new addition to a historic site.

The exhibition will remain on view Tuesday-Fridays, 10am-5pm, through June 29. I will speak more to this piece and how it responds to Ansel Adams’ 1941 photograph, ‘Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico’, alongside docu-segments, at a June 18, 6pm talk/screening at CENTER. Details in bio! by @jcgonzo

Attending the 2026 Border Biennial openings at both @elpasomuseumofart and @museodeartedeciudadjuarez was affirming and inspiring. I loved witnessing and learning about multiple perspectives, experiences, and values from such a diverse cross-section of artists. The borderland’s influence is vast and multilayered, and I’m forever grateful to have been included in this cohort. Curators Dr. Adriana Miramontes Olivas and Alejandro Morales put together a really great show.

Thank you to the museum curators and admin (Michael Reyes, Diego Diego, Edward Hayes, and more) for such a gracious welcome and thoughtful opening receptions. Massive thanks for the gorgeous installations of my work to both museums. The special care and effort by both institutions really delivered my hopes and intentions for how these pieces are experienced. Seeing ‘23 Minutes…’ in this fashion was wonderful. It was also my first visit to the Museo de Arte de Ciudad Juárez—very cool architecture!

The exhibition is on view in El Paso through May 2, 2027, and in Juarez, through Feb. 14, 2027. by @jcgonzo

I’ll be at the Border Biennial opening tonight in El Paso and tomorrow in Juarez. At the end of 2023 I began filming “23 Minutes of Chihuahuan Desert” and this past spring I completed it. Each visit was time spent with family and time spent wandering into the desert, one cartridge of super 8 at a time. Glad to see it finally come together and be shown in the heart of what birthed it. by @jcgonzo

For the 2026 Border Biennial / Bienal Fronteriza, I’m thrilled to share my film ‘23 Minutes of Chihuahuan Desert.’ The piece implements structural filmmaking elements to hold meditative space for the discords and harmonies between place and perception that we carry. Scored by the incredible @the_land_ethic.wav (Andrew Weathers), each minute presents a static view of the desert surrounding the El Paso/Juarez border region.

Shot over the course of three years with super 8 film, I wanted to present this landscape I grew up with in its various complex states of being. This historically contested area is politically charged, mythologized, unsustainably utilized, and is both the passageway and home of many cultures. In a narrative film, the landscape sets the stage. In this film, the landscape is the stage.

Weathers’ score incorporates field recordings of the region, recalling a faint but recognizable fusion of human activity and nature. For me, it evoked what it feels like to exist outside, in this desert, for a long period of time. The film will be installed at the @elpasomuseumofart and opens on Sept. 4th. I’ll be sharing more about what I’ll be exhibiting at the @museodeartedeciudadjuarez (opening Sept. 5th) soon! by @jcgonzo

As New Mexico transitioned from burials beneath church floors to cemeteries, some sites required each household to contribute adobe bricks to build the cemetery’s parameter walls. With scant resources, towns had to adapt creative solutions to maintaining these new burial sites and methods.

Hear me talk about this and more at Thursday nights talk/screening! That’s tomorrow, June 18, 6pm, at @centersantafe — open to the public.

At 6pm on Thursday, June 18 I will be hosting a talk and screening at @centersantafe featuring my docu-vignettes on the Black Range region of New Mexico. I’ll share some insights on my artistic process and progression through this series while providing some historical context on New Mexico’s unique evolution of burial practices.

In this clip: Kingston Ghost Town Museum founder Barbara Lovell discusses her research on the Kingston cemetery. Kingston, another mining town in the Black Range area, carries some unique distinguishing qualities.

“I remember going to a funeral by my church in La Union, New Mexico, and immediately noticing the distinction and uniqueness of the space. Even in cartoons, you see the traditional marble— you see traditional stone. The desert landscape provided a different setting, but was sometimes literally incorporated with the headstones—cholla crosses, native plant life planted directly and intentionally onto burial mounds.” — @jcgonzo

A clip from the docu-series featuring Garland Bills of Hillsboro discussing the towns cemetery. The full version will be screened on June 16 at Center, 6pm, proceeded by a talk. The music in this docu-series is by @daniel_the_most (Daniel Siuba). ✨

The former Hillsboro Historical Society board member and UNM professor has taken on documenting and researching graves for Hillsboro and Lake Valley. While not a cemetery keeper, having had spoken to cemetery keepers, I’ve assessed that many of the challenges faced here are relatively prevalent, especially in older and/or rural areas. by @jcgonzo
