Wild to think that the singer on this demo tape from what seems like a lifetime away had his passing noted in depth in the New York Times. Running around New York as a teenager, watching bands like Sick of it All and many more are some of the wildest memories I have. I was so lucky just to be there, and I’m glad I still have many of the friends I ran with back then, a matinee show on the Lower East Side to a full bill at the Marquee. I got to see Lou Koller and SOIA one last time in Kansas City. I showed up late from a wine dinner, wearing a suit, and I remember catching Lou after the show and marveling that this tape still existed and that we were still around to laugh about it. I felt the loss when I read about, not because he was famous, but because he was such a good guy who repped the best so many of us hoped to be when we were just angry kids throwing ourselves around at shows, never being sure if we would be around long enough to grow up at all. by @jcoley3

I know people are used to more “adventures around the world!” IG posts from me, and I love that. But 2026 so far is all about buying this lovely little home and doing exciting things like weeding the front walk. by @jcoley3

In honor of seven years of sobriety, I am posting @kavehakbar.kavehakbar’s poem ‘Seven Years Sober,' and also a picture of myself chilling out on a beautiful day.

Seven years feels like a lifetime ago. I barely recognize myself these days, though people who know me tell me I’m not THAT different. Happier, more content, more peaceful, yes, but essentially me. It’s hard to imagine that seven years ago was the end, in a sense, of a life that was in many ways a rousing success and yet felt like a dismal failure inside. These days I wake up and sometimes linger in bed just because it feels so good to be warm and rested and most of all, okay. Seven years ago I would hide underneath the covers and let anxiety have its way with me, rising from bed because my heart was racing, then rolling back into bed because I hadn’t yet mustered the courage to face the day.

There’s a word Akbar’s poem – ‘Gurfa’ – a word that means ‘the amount of water one hand can hold’ – a desert word. One thing I remember from March 2019 was finally escaping the bedroom for the bathroom, and once there staring bleary-eyed at my own reflection, consumed with the boundless thirst of an alcoholic, and then running the sink and slamming handfuls of water over and over into my mouth and realizing there was never going to be enough to feel that thirst properly quenched.

That’s where you find yourself with this disease, eventually. In a desert of sorts, not a real one, but a spiritual and emotional one that feels blinding and howling inside, complete with a thirst that nothing can slake. And every morning, never enough water.

Not every photo of me involves a faraway location (though it would be nice), here’s selfie of the moment in the downstairs of Vita’s Place, who knocked out an amazing Robert Craig wine dinner from the smallest kitchen imaginable. Even in my “participation” is limited to the professional side of things, I still enjoy being a part of them. by @jcoley3

I always forget to post stuff here and not just on stories, but truth is I’m a lot more into being underwater and enjoying it than I am content creating, but here’s a couple of pictures for the TL taken in Cozumel, Quintana Roo, Mexico. by @jcoley3

This year’s birthday is not this epic (I have so many videos I never posted), but that’s fine. If 2023 was the year I extricated myself from a lot of wreckage, this year has been about the discovery of the kind of centered day-to-day life I always wanted but never quite found. The thing for me is that I kept asking for better. It didn’t always come right away, and if it did it sometimes came in unrecognizable (until later) forms, but better was out there for me. by @jcoley3

Funny, looking back to this day last year I feel like I didn’t post a lot of pictures from my time in Tanzania. This was such a breathtaking part of the world, and just about everything I dreamed of it being when I was planning the adventures that would have me circle the globe over the span of a few months. This year has been quiet, but I have a new, fresh passport waiting for 2025… taken in Rim of Ngorongoro Crater by @jcoley3

Halfway through the trip, a list of the dive sites visited, encountering a still active volcano (with yrs truly in the foreground), a rare moment in land with blue whale skeleton, a village elder, the local still and speakeasy ( I took a small taste and spit, let’s just say the crew made a lot of Malort faces) and the sun setting over the ocean while I read Ulysses on deck by @jcoley3
