Another London council rejects racist Home Office raids.

Congratulations to Newham and the cross-party councillors who worked to make this happen @newhamgreens & @newhamindependentsparty.

In the motion titled “Defending Newham as a Borough of Sanctuary: Ending council support for immigration raids” the council committed to refuse support to Home Office raids and said that they “cause fear and distress within communities”. The council reaffirmed that Newham is a Borough of Sanctuary and that it would work with local groups to support and provide information on people’s rights.

Good riddance to the cruel and inhumane ‘one in one out’ deal between the UK and France, which amounted to state-sanctioned human trafficking.

We stand in solidarity with all those who were targeted by this grim scheme. Some of the people we represented who were detained under this horrific policy included lone children, who were held in detention as adults.

We commend everyone who
has organised, advocated and exposed the violence and harm at the heart of it, including all those who challenged the private airlines underpinning and profiting from these flights.

However, people detained under this deal are still being held in detention centres. They must all be released.

People seeking safety from war , persecution and climate destruction, must be allowed to travel the same safe routes as everyone else, and we must welcome them to rebuild their lives within our communities. by @jcwi_uk

❗️DON’T LET THE GOVERNMENT SOFT LAUNCH EARNED SETTLEMENT, then steamroll ahead, without scrutiny.

Changes on Earned Settlement have been quietly moving through different mechanisms. It is not law yet, but people are reorganising their lives around it. As Labour Party Conference approaches, we predict that government may try to push Earned Settlement via a Statement of Changes, bypassing public inquiry, and our say, entirely.

Settlement should NOT be “earned”. No one should have to prove their worth to belong, constantly working to 'earn' settlement only for the rules to shift beneath them. The government must SCRAP earned settlement in its entirety ✊
