I can’t even tell you all how much it meant to me to talk about The Bohemians at The Commonwealth Club earlier tonight. For this immigrant and child of immigrants, standing on this hallowed stage, albeit virtually, alongside my friend Julia Flynn Siler, was an honest-to-goodness dream come true. by @jdarznik

This was one of the most special conversations of my life.

I first read Isabel Allende when I was a teenager, and her books showed me how much a woman’s imagination could contain, which is the whole world.

To sit beside her all these years later—to talk about the writing life, memory, courage, and the stories that still insist on being told—felt both exhilarating and profoundly unreal.

Isabel, thank you for the books that helped make my own books possible, and for your inimitable spirit.

Thank you to Book Passage for bringing us together & to my many friends for sharing this day with us.

And! Everyone get your hands on Isabel’s fantastic new book, Story Telling.

Is this a dream??? In a few weeks I’ll be in conversation with the magnificent Isabel Allende, who has shaped me as no other writer has. We’ll be discussing STORY TELLING, her new book about writing, imagination, memory, and the life that grows up around the work.

And! It takes place at the bookstore where so many years ago I first encountered her writing: Book Passage.

I hope some of you will come spend the morning with us!

Delighted to be in conversation with the wonderful Vanessa Hua about her new novel, Coyoteland, a sharp, funny story of family, belonging, ambition, and the uneasy tensions beneath the polished surface of an affluent Bay Area community.

Please come spend the evening with us at the beautiful Mill Valley Public Library.

Turns out out the thrill of going back to school never wears off. ✨

I’ve just wrapped my first week teaching in the MFA program at the University of San Francisco. This fall, I’m leading The Archive and the Imagination, a seminar about fragments, memory, history, and the stories we create from what remains.

Here’s to the abiding pleasure of beginning again. 💚💛 by @jdarznik

Forugh Farrokhzad: Poet. Filmmaker. Renegade.

The woman whose life eventually led me to write Song of a Captive Bird.

Certain writers become lifelong companions. Years after Song of a Captive Bird, I still find myself returning to her work, her courage, and her verve.

Here’s to the women who show us what’s possible. 💪🏻❤️ by @jdarznik

What I’ve been looking at this week:

Paintings that make me want to garden.
Gardens that make me want to write.
Novels that remind me what fiction can do. Photographs that reveal the child inside the icon. Postcards from vanished worlds.

I’ve always collected fragments—images, objects, books, places. Sometimes I know exactly why. More often, I don’t.

This week, these were the things I’ve kept looking at. by @jdarznik

What I love most about objects is that they survive us. They pass through hands and attics and estate sales and decades, carrying traces of lives we’ll never fully know.

That’s what stories are, too: travelers and survivors.
