I am grieving for the life she couldn't have.
I am grieving for the child she couldn't hold.
I am grieving for the love she couldn't receive.
I am grieving for her mother she couldn't accompany.
I am grieving for the soil that tastes her dying misery and agony.

Song of a Captive Bird - Jasmine Darznik.

I already knew that this book was interesting by simply reading the synopsis and its country background. Yet, when I dug deeper, this book offers beyond interesting matters, they are the complexity of life faced by Forugh Farrokhzad, as a woman under dictatorship with women-limited regulations, who loves poetry and freedom.

This book brings the definition of "Who am I to judge when I know nothing of their options?" to the table. By the end of this book, after being brought through Forugh's life journey, I felt hurt, a really bad one, to know that she couldn't get the life that she desires, a simple one.

Writing wise, this book will provide you with digestable english writing style in which you will find no issue to read without translation. Even though this book consists of various stories and background issues, I am certain to say that every transition was tailored neatly.

Overall, I rate this book for 9/10 ✨

you don’t need to love history class to love these books 📚✨

three thousand years, five authors, and not a single dull page: Clytemnestra & Babylonia by Costanza Casati, The Wolf Den trilogy & Boudicca’s Daughter by Elodie Harper, The Marriage Portrait & Hamnet by Maggie O’Farrell, and Persepolis alongside Song of a Captive Bird for a look at revolution-era Iran. ❤️‍🔥

real queens, real poets, real women history almost wrote out of the story.

which era are you most drawn to?

Today, at Book Passage, I listened to Isabel Allende and Jasmin Darznik talk about storytelling and thought of Gloria Steinem’s enduring message: our stories matter.

They connect us, preserve what might otherwise be lost, help us understand where we’ve been, and where we’re going.

But before you write the book, shape the story, or find the perfect opening line, you have to do one thing:

Start.

That’s the heart of my next Liberté Ladies Writing Salon.

Six women. One day in my Presidio home. Writing, conversation, lunch, courage, and a roadmap for bringing the story in your head onto the page.

There is now one spot left.

If you’ve been saying, “Someday I’m going to write that book,” perhaps September 26 is your someday.

Come write with me.

First Salon: First Step to Freedom
Saturday, September 26
11:00 AM–4:00 PM
The Presidio, San Francisco

Such fun to attend Isabelle Allende’s event @bookpassage. The wonderful @jdarznik led the conversation about Isabelle’s new book on the writing craft. They touched on a variety of topics including AI to which Isabelle simply replied: “What connects us are our stories as in our lives experiences!” 💕

📚 The Iranian Diaspora's Literary Atlas — Part III has landed. 19 more Iranian-origin writers redefining storytelling beyond Persian: PEN/Faulkner and National Book Award honorees, poets reframing the language of war, journalists risking everything to document a nation's uprising in real time, and memoirists turning trauma into testimony.

This list keeps growing because of you — please keep introducing more brilliant Iranian authors in the comments below. Part IV (and beyond) is already in the works. 👇

Tonight! We are so excited to welcome Vanessa Hua in conversation with Jasmin Darznik in honor of Vanessa's new book Coyoteland. From the bestselling author of A River of Stars comes a funny, heartfelt novel set in an affluent Bay Area suburb where a Chinese American family moves in and sets off a series of scandals.

USF MFA in Writing faculty member Jasmin Darznik will be in conversation with Vanessa Hua, USF’s current Ann Getty Fellow, about Hua’s new novel, Coyoteland.

Set in the East Bay hills, the novel explores family, race, class, belonging, and the unexpected forces—human and otherwise—that can unsettle a seemingly perfect neighborhood.
