My latest essay for The Photosphere is about @corinnebotz ‘s excellent, urgent book Milk Factory, published by @saint_lucy_books . Botz photographed the spaces—closets, basements, tents, tractor cabs, and empty classrooms— made available for working, breastfeeding women to pump milk for their babies. The US is one of only seven countries that don’t mandate paid maternity leave, so many women have to (or want to) return to work while they’re still nursing. While the PUMP Act, passed only in 2022, requires employers to provide break times and private spaces to pump milk, those space vary widely. It’s not supposed to be a bathroom, for example, but it often is. Pumping, Botz observes in the book, is an accurate reflection of what being a parent in a late capitalist society that values productivity over health and attachments.”

A bonus to our trip to Amsterdam this summer was seeing the Ed van der Elsken exhibition, Up Close, at the @rijksmuseum. It was a sprawling show, with plenty of great examples of van der Elsken’s seductive, scrappy street photographs, portraits and moody jazz pictures. “Pretty young ladies in silk dresses, ministers, and boxing champions. … That’s what they want. But I want and can do something different. Dead birds and poor people… that’s what I make beautiful,” said van der Elsken. And he did. I wrote about the show for @deardavemag . My latest installment of The Photosphere is on Martine Gutierrez and her show Wunderkind at the Huis Marseille in Amsterdam, an exhibition that confirms that Gutierrez’s sense of herself- as a girl, an artist, a performer and a provocateur- was there from the beginning. The show is a celebration of play and transformation- and mermaids- and an ode to the artist’s mother.

My essay on the photographer Pao Houa Her in the New York Review of Books is online now. Her, a Hmong photographer whose portraits, landscapes, and video works are rooted in her immigrant community’s enduring sense of displacement and loss, had concurrent exhibitions at the Kohler Art Center in Wisconsin and the San Jose Museum of Art, and the book The Imaginative Landscape is out now.

My latest essay for The Photosphere is on @cianniv ‘s new book, Archive/Journal, 1985-1995/2001, published by @daylightbooks .

Archive/Journal is a photographic history, a visual memoir, and an act of political resistance in a time in which the Trump administration has been actively attempting to dismantle the history and achievements of queer people.

The first volume is Cianni’s birds-eye view of the activism at the height of the AIDS epidemic, with on-the-ground, in-the-mix photographs …

The intimate and introspective second volume contains tender, candid photographs of friends and lovers as well as manipulated Polaroids…The sense of loss is profound but so is the sense of a determined and dedicated artistic life.

Happy to have my review of Chris Wiley: Galesburg, at @nicellebeauchene last month, in the latest issue of Dave, of the Week, on Substack. @weistwiley photographs signs of wear and tear on small-scale, domestic details— a truck, a couch, the tattered window shades of a down-at-heel house— with tenderness and regard, alluding to the decline in the health and financial stability of the people of Galesburg (and by extension, other small cities across the country).

My latest essay for The Photosphere, about Pia Paulina Guilmoth’s (@p_guilmoth ) otherworldly nocturnal images, is out now on Substack.

Guilmoth’s black-and-white photographs are rooted in the natural world – specifically, the woods, ponds, and fields near her home in rural Maine that serve as the setting for atmospheric images of her friends (covered in mud, paddling in a canoe at night, or pissing from a tree branch), woodland creatures (deer, heron), spider webs, the night sky. Some images, like Rhubarb Mother, have an uncanny, Roger Ballen quality…
