Formerly the Norton Family Assistant Curator of Photography at the Center for Creative Photography (CCP) at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Sands is the author of the critically acclaimed Lisette Model: The Jazz Pictures, published last year by the Eakins Press Foundation. DEAR DAVE, photograph of the day 🥥by CHRIS WILEY from the Dave, of the Week review by Jean Dykstra ✍️”Those people hover like ghosts in the background of these prose-poem images, evoked in the photographs without being centered and subject to the voyeurism of well-meaning social documentary tropes”. @weistwiley @jeanmdykstra 🪗

Matar’s books are available at Pictura Gallery! 11-5pm Tues-Fri.

“A question, an unresolved decision, runs throughout these portraits. For those who are able, when – if ever – is it time to leave your home?

Matar, like Rineke Dijkstra or Judith Joy Ross, is a sensitive and curious portraitist, especially of women and girls. She’s also a cinematic photographer who imbues her images with dramatic tension. Beautifully composed, made with an awareness of architectural space and light, her pictures nonetheless remind us that the destruction playing out on a global scale has life-altering consequences for these young women on the cusp of adulthood.”

Great news: ‘Archipelago’ by @yolanda.delamo has been shortlisted for the @photoespana_ Book Award in the Creación category.

Given Yolanda’s roots in Spain and the way she constructs her images, this category feels like a particularly good fit. The book holds staged tableaux in which she carefully arranges the backdrop, furniture, objects, and the people. Everything, including the composition, and the gaze, postures and gestures of her subjects, is directed by Yolanda to generate a distinct emotional charge and psychological tension between them. Huge congratulations to Yolanda and her publisher. Brilliant work, and I hope more awards are to come.

If you’re in London, stop by @photolondonfair at the @kehrerverlag booth. She’ll be signing copies of ‘Archipelago’ on Thursday, May 14 at 2pm.

Join Vincent Cianni and Jean Dykstra with in conversation about Cianni’s new book Archive / Journal: 1995 - 1985/2001

Published and presented by @daylightbooks at @icp Photobook Fest

@cianniv
@jeanmdykstra

During the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown, Vincent Cianni revisited over one hundred rolls of film from NYC Pride marches photographed between 1985 and 1995. For three months, he spent 6 to 8 hours a day, 5 to 6 days a week in the darkroom, editing and printing more than 140 photographs, many of which had never been printed before. The images documented Pride marches that took place during the height of another health crisis, the AIDS epidemic, the insidious and devastating disease that ravaged the LGBTQ+ community.

Vincent Cianni will be signing books on Saturday, May 9 at 12pm - 1pm. Same address, 3rd Floor at the Daylight Books booth.
