Random Thought of the Day: Kansas Limestone is the design language that clearly speaks without saying a word. It can be used to represent every aesthetic style, and lasts longer than any concrete product. The dichotomies are endless (simple vs complex, clean vs rough, large vs small, bold vs quiet, etc) which allow creative minds to use it freely.

Here is a 30 second video that simplifies the construction document process which normally takes weeks or months.

The #conceptual design process has concluded, and will locate major design elements on the land. From this, we generate
layout and dimensioning documents that help set building elevation, road alignments, and details for civil engineers to
work from.

Once the dimensions are set, we select a proper planting scheme that fits stylistically and ecologically to land it is located.

Planting details, irrigation plans, Pool/water features, and site specific details are drawn up on a case by case basis, which
allow contractors to bid from. I always encourage last minute adjustments, especially while laying out plants, to reach the
highest level of detailing possible.

Finalizing details takes #collaboration with Architects and Civil Engineers, so that each cover the extent of the work requested.
A Landscape Architect is capable of speaking the language of both professions while adding landscape as a critical element
to tie it all together from an ecological perspective.

How to be Good at what you do:
1. Practice Your Craft- It is in the act of doing, that we learn the most.
2. Learn from the Masters- Study their process in context to the historical period they are found. Include studies into hard and complex subject to remain well rounded.
3. Repeat- Make mistakes. Earn success. Be humble enough to learn from both.

This is your reminder to get outside, go for a walk, enjoy the blessings of nature, and forget those things which weigh you down.

In the meantime, I will continue trying to bring more beautiful moments into the world. A passing Monarch on a compass plant over a restored prairie, for example. Natural is our guide.

Here we go again!
The next ICAA Kansas City Sketching Series will be October 17, from 10-12pm. Free! All skill levels welcome. There is a place for everyone. We have people who just want to try something new, and we have a few local Architects who are extremely gifted. We will meet at the fountain at 10 am to discuss the history. Everyone breaks off to find places to work, then returns to discuss what they found. We always have new people, and you are welcome to hang with me if this is all new. I enjoy collaboration, process, and discussing the vision of an artist. If you are on the fence, just reach out to me and I will help you thru it.

We have reached the end of Summer.

Every garden has peaked; every garden hope complete.

Enjoy the cool evening air, occasional rain, and break in the season. Leave the garden growth for the animals to forage throughout the winter. When a warm spring spells flirts with you, you will know where to start.

I was shopping for deals on various planters ar @suburbanlg awhile back. They have a wonderful selection of contrasting colors and shapes that most people can get into.

Potted arrangements can be tricky to use as a design tool in the landscape. Many times, I see a hodge podge of exploration that makes no sense. To help simplify this problem for the DIY types, begin with “Will the arrangement be a focal point, or complimentary aspect of the overall landscape?”
If it is a focal point, then contrast with the surrounding using typical design techniques (Color, form, texture, size, etc)
If complimentary, then follow an analogous color scheme based off surrounding dominant colors.
Always pull cues from the Architecture.

Hopefully that helps in selecting your future potted arrangement. Or… just hire it all out!
