#JEFFAMENT: “After we sold a bazillion records on Ten we had a bit of power so we decided to exert that power. What would a music fan want? We approached things from that standpoint. The way that Pink Floyd put out packages using Hipgnosis artwork, Led Zeppelin used real special packaging. It was mystical and super creative and a lot of times it was totally off the wall I like to think that we used that little bit of power to make stuff that looked cooler.”

#Daughter was the second single released from Vs and would become the album’s biggest hit. It topped the Mainstream Rock Chart for 8 weeks and hit No. 1 on the Modern Rock chart.
#EddieVedder told Melody Maker, “The child in that song obviously has a learning difficulty. And it’s only in the last few years that they’ve actually been able to diagnose these learning disabilities that before were looked at as misbehavior, as just outright rebelliousness. But no one knew what it was. And these kids, because they seemed unable or reluctant to learn, they’d end up getting the shit beaten outta them. The song ends, you know, with this idea of the shades going down — so that the neighbors can’t see what happens next. What hurts about s–t like that is that it ends up defining people’s lives. They have to live with that abuse for the rest of their lives. Good, creative people are just fucking destroyed.”

#DaveAbbruzzese: “I told our manager that I just bought a coupla’ guns, and he told Jeff, and at rehearsal Jeff kinda’ blurted it out. And Eddie went, ‘Whaaaat, you bought a GUN?’ And I said, ‘In fact, I bought two,’ which ended up as the opening line of the song. I think it’s fair to say Eddie was pretty outraged.”

JAA’s #VsWeek
The proposed, working title for Vs., was “Five Against One.”
Stone Gossard said this about that original title:
“For me, that title represented a lot of struggles that you go through trying to make a record. Your own independence — your own soul — versus everybody else’s. In this band, and I think in rock in general, the art of compromise is almost as important as the art of individual expression. You might have five great artists in the band, but if they can’t compromise and work together, you don’t have a great band. It might mean something completely different to Eddie. But when I heard that lyric, it made a lot of sense to me.” by @jeffamentsarmy

“I don’t wanna talk about [who the anger is directed at]. It’s not so much personal, it’s just, some person at the record company said the other day that they wanted the vocals turned up. He wanted people to understand exactly what I was singing. So I told him what it was about and he said, ‘You’re right. Let’s leave the vocals as they are. Maybe we don’t really want people to understand it.’”

When an interviewer—in 1993–suggested that many of the songs on Vs could be called “grunge-funk,” Mike McCready said this:
“Well, Eddie has always been into old Michael Jackson and Jackson Five stuff. I love Funkadelic, Stone’s into rap, and we’re all totally into Ice Cube, so that probably had an effect. Not the we consciously sat down and decided to be funky - we’re just exploring different directions and combining our influences.”
