It's been a year since I started working on this cover! So much has happened since! I am so thankful for this opportunity to work on the project. Thank you to @thebrokennbinding for the honor of working on these books and to @petrikleo for the amazing art direction!

Here is a bit of the process from start to finish that I went through!

This one maks me smile every time I see it on my shelf!

This was my first cover created for @thebrokennbinding. @petrikleo had a pretty clear vision for it, so there weren't multiple drafts on this, just some minor changes along the way.

the main idea was to show the chaotic era, rapidly changing from extreme heat to extreme cold. The spine shows the color shift from one to the other as does the sprayed edge.

Of course we got the three suns in there, and wanting to get some more imagery from the book, I integrated the pendulums into the typography which I think worked out great!

I am really happy with books 2 and 3 but this one has something special and means a lot to me!

Which is your favorite of the three?

MAKING OF ERAGON!

This is the dust jacket I designed and illustrated for @christopher_paolini's special editions the Inheritance cycle, published by @thebrokennbinding and @penguinukbooks. Art direction for the dust jackets was with @petrikleo and for the rest of the project Eon van Aswegen.

We tried out a lot of ideas for this one. From the start, we wanted something that was:

-Iconic
-Highlighted the dragons with their riders
-Had dragons going across the full dust jacket

Even with this, I tried out a few ideas that didn't follow the dragon across the whole dust jacket. It's always good to try things out, you never know what might work!

Being able to design the typography as well as create the illustration is huge for me in the ideation phase, making sure that they work well together. During this phase, I would send sketches to @petrikleo and we would discuss what we liked and disliked about each one. I did about 10 sketches but these were the main contenders.

While we liked all of them in a lot of ways, and I don't think there is a wrong answer, we went with the one we did because it just fit with everything we wanted. The first one was too dark and while very different, similar in tone to the original dust jacket. We loved the idea of a white background but with some sense of a landscape.

Once we had the idea down, it was a matter of detailing, working out the anatomy, and finding the right font. The font actually took me a good 3-4 hours to find, I went through so many to get to this one, in the end I am extremely happy with it.

Near the final stages, I brought the illustration into a program called Rebelle which replicates traditional media such as oil painting, It feels like you are actually moving paint around and we loved the look!

🎨 SFF ARTIST APPRECIATION 🎨
Welcome to another edition of my artist/designer spotlight series, where I spread the love for my favorite creatives in the SFF space.

This time I’m shouting out my friend @jeffbrown_graphics, hands down one of the best artists around. Every piece Jeff creates is so evocative, with characters and environments that always feel alive, as well as typography that perfectly compliments his artwork. He also has the most experimental imagination of any artist I’ve worked with, as is evident by the insane-yet-beautiful art he created for The Book of Spores. Don’t hesitate to hire Jeff, cause he’ll exceed every expectation you have. by @jeffbrown_graphics

Jeff Brown is the best cover artist in the business, and I have been trying to work with him since I first redid the cover for Gift of the Shaper. He was amazing to work with, and I'm absolutely floored at the final product.

I hope you all are as blown away by it as I was. by @jeffbrown_graphics

The gorgeous artwork is from @jeffbrown_graphics. Interesting fact, if you swipe, you'll see @thebrokennbinding editions of Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn which were ALSO illustrated by @jeffbrown_graphics!

Have you started your journey in Osten Ard? And if so, which is your favorite series/story?
