I figured Stacy and I must be on anniversary 6 or 7 by now so I got a calendar and a handful counting beans. The beans ran out, so I grabbed more, then ran out again. The final calculation… 17 years in legal terms and almost 21 years in real terms. Crikey!

Anywhooo… a few months back at a show, we wandered into @jonchristianashby’s FOV and he somehow captured our relationship in 1/250th of a second.

Here's an old one from almost half my life ago. Frontside grind in the 8', shot by @shralpyshralperton (aka John Raimondo). Must be July 2003 because I'm wearing camo shorts. The colour-coordinated shoes and elbow pad deserve a mention as the first and last yellow clothing items I've owned.

This grind followed by the same on the west wall is probably my all-time favourite Hastings combo. Frontside grinds just feel nice, and 8' means that whole-body pump rather than just a leg pump (insert immature joke here). The line has speed helpers too - pump the back of the spine on the way to the first grind and then pump the bottom of the island thingy on the way back for the second. Speed, flow, trucks on coping... what more do you need?

That said, I've been fairly shit at this line for a while now - working way too hard for tiny scratchers. The park's aging surface has been a convenient scapegoat, so when Hastings gets resurfaced I better not need a new excuse.

Talking 25 years of Hastings skatepark without mentioning this gem of a human is like putting copers on your trucks. Rosie floats a lien over the 6' hip in 2006.

Known to some as Mark Rowe, this reclusive hoser is a serious ripper and funny as all hell. Please enjoy two of my favourite Rosie moments.

1. In 2005 I accompanied The Slugs (Seb, Luke, Trevor, Rosie, Strato, and Dayna) to Australia for a month of skating and debauchery. One night, while illegally camped in a city park and listening to the late-night sounds of reckless shopping cart use emanating from a nearby parking lot, one of us said, "Probably a bunch of kids." Rosie, surveying our hobo village of spraypainted tents, strewn skateboards, and pile of beer cans, said, "Yeah... or maybe it's a bunch of 30-year-old men."

2. Rosie arrived to a Hastings session chuckling to himself and told me, "We got right hosed last night and when I got home I grabbed a bun off the counter, got into bed, and just ate the whole thing plain. I wake up in the morning, the bed's covered in white crumbs, and my girlfriend's saying, 'Mark! What are all these crumbs in the bed?!'" Then he laughed that Rosie laugh that we all know and love.

George Faulkner examines the coping at the top of a 10’3” concrete wall. Classic invert in the Hastings deep end. I started skating in 1988 and I’m willing to bet that @faulknerinvert was already hitting the vert ramp with these.

Being a casual photographer means that my collection has a lot of recurring people and places. I’ve skated with George more than most - pretty obvious if you flip through my slide binder.

On the flipside - I’m missing a lot of people. Sometimes I don’t shoot because I didn’t bring my camera. Or I have it, but am too busy skating. Or the session is so hectic that I kind of want to shoot but don’t know where to set up. Or I just feel like visiting with the folks and basking in the ambience.

Anyway... if I skate with you, I do want to shoot a photo of you sometime and I hope it happens.

In late 2001, in my early stages of getting sucked into the Hastings vortex, the place was so big... and concrete (I’d only skated wood)... and the locals were so good... and nobody wore pads... etc... that the adrenaline rush from my first few runs would give me the shakes. I’d have to sit for a while until my legs calmed down.

@dirtboyz77 - along with Jeff Logan, Chris Steggles (RIP), and Josh Evin (RIP) - epitomized that era. For someone who hadn’t even figured out how to 50-50 the shallow end yet, witnessing the casual aggression of those dudes attacking eight feet of concrete barely made sense.
