Here's an old one from almost half my life ago. Frontside grind in the 8', shot by @shralpyshralperton (aka John Raimondo). Must be July 2003 because I'm wearing camo shorts. The colour-coordinated shoes and elbow pad deserve a mention as the first and last yellow clothing items I've owned.

This grind followed by the same on the west wall is probably my all-time favourite Hastings combo. Frontside grinds just feel nice, and 8' means that whole-body pump rather than just a leg pump (insert immature joke here). The line has speed helpers too - pump the back of the spine on the way to the first grind and then pump the bottom of the island thingy on the way back for the second. Speed, flow, trucks on coping... what more do you need?

That said, I've been fairly shit at this line for a while now - working way too hard for tiny scratchers. The park's aging surface has been a convenient scapegoat, so when Hastings gets resurfaced I better not need a new excuse.

Following an archetype set by @nvsktbrdr’s overhead blasts at Griffin, the Canadian flyout tradition celebrates young joints and high-flying indulgent fun. The early Hastings sessions invariably featured interludes of everyone hucking themselves out of the 6’ and onto the deck.

Recalling the oft-maligned ‘80s launch ramp era, the antics might include @pidgeonsimon’s crazy looking 360 corkscrews, Little Ryan’s backside 180 methods that seemed twice his height, and all manner of kickflips, pop-shoves, tweaks, airwalks, rocket airs, bonks or footplants over the garbage can, and everything in between. Carcasses flew, decks cracked, and cartilage lifespans were shortened.

The Raimondo Hastings Factor (cont’d). In winter 2002-03 I worked at Cypress Mountain Sports at Park Royal in West Van, which was dying a slow death because minimal snow after February meant nobody was buying gear. The upside? Spring afternoon Hastings sessions thanks to @shralpy_shralperton and his Tigertorch.

Desperate to save pennies, Cypress was more than happy for me to clock out at 2:00. I’d drive to Hastings and find John and Co. torching out the section from the 8’ pocket to the deep end. I remember the regulars being @sluggoboyce, Nik Parker, Phil Medwid, @nvsktbrdr @howardredekopp @pragsy @seansheeppumperkearns …

Before this, the most I’d do in the 10’ was carve a little backside grind. But during those sessions I started ollieing the hip from 8’ into 10’ and figured I looked like that Slap photo of Alan Petersen going face high at Wollongong. Far from true, but they still felt good. John shot this photo a few months later. You can tell it’s summer 2003 because I’m wearing camo shorts.

Hastings skatepark turns 25 this month so I’m going into the stacks for a bit. I’ve shared most of these over the years but hopefully I find some new/old ones.

I moved to Vancouver in October 2001 at the tender age of 26 as a Toronto street skater who could drop in, pump a corner, and scratch a grind for a centimeter or two. The speedlines started getting faster, accidental little backside ollies joined the mix, and my earliest Hastings photo is this one over the 6’ hip. You can tell it’s spring 2002 because I’m wearing camo shorts. Check out that tiny Reese Forbes toothpick - I’m guessing 7.5.

Look carefully and you’ll see @hurricanejonnyb on the deck. I didn’t even know the guy yet but as it turned out, we’d both find ourselves unemployed that summer and skating the park every day.

I don’t remember who shot this, but they used my Yashica T5 point-and-shoot. Impressive timing, considering the shutter delay on those little gems

The best powder day moments never get captured. Pausing a high-speed bomb to shoot a clip is a violation of the sacred rhythm. Plus, that clown behind you will steal your next untracked turn.
That said, on this February day at Red Mountain, we did catch a few mellow turns during a break in the action. Clip 1 shot by @joelwright6552 , clip 2 of Joel shot by me immediately after.

Monday night: Snowboard in dumping snow with plenty of “moments of float” and a surprising number of untracked turns.
Tuesday afternoon: Rainforest trail run under blue skies with yesterday’s snow cranking up the creekflow.

Nice place we got here.

Saturday jackassery with Rosie, the jolliest and most elusive of the classic Hastings hosers.

A very nice extended weekend of subzero nights with days alternating between blowing snow and clear skies. The tipi/woodstove combo proved its worth once again.

Highlights: The bull moose who sounded like he was trying to smash down half the forest, and the owl who swooped past and into the treeline, much to the chagrin of the squealing rodent it found in there.

First session after three weeks in Africa. Spent the tail end of golden hour on old standards, then got into new material. Frontside noseslides are new trick #2 since joining Team 50+.
Fingus the Gutter Rat needs to work on his framing.
