Excited to have finally gotten the chance to interview @samsmith. I’ve been talking to their publicist for literally seven years, lol. Please never underestimate how annoying I can be.

You can read our interview on the @newyorkermag site, listen on The New Yorker Radio Hour podcast, or watch on YouTube.

This is my first article for The New Yorker...a surprising/fascinating/ultimately exhilarating number of hands touched it. Grateful for all of them, especially @alex_barasch.

Okay, bye! by @jeffmasters1

Something I didn’t know before my interview with Avram Finkelstein: The “Silence = Death” poster predates ACT UP.

Avram lost his partner in 1984, relatively early in the AIDS crisis. Soon after, he began having weekly dinners with five friends: Brian Howard, Oliver Johnston, Charles Kreloff, Chris Lione, and Jorge Socárras. “We needed a place to consider what being gay in the age of AIDS meant,” he told me.

The poster was born out of those dinners, eventually becoming a symbol of ACT UP (Avram was a founding member) and one of the most influential works of protest art in history.

I’ve been interviewing different LGBTQ+ elders over the last few months and am releasing them on my soon-to-be ten-year old podchild, LGBTQ&A. You can listen to my convo with Avram there. @lgbtqpod 🏳️‍🌈 by @jeffmasters1

New #quilt. Materials: some leftover blues and greys from my last quilt, a beautiful yard of Kaffe Fassett that my aunt gifted me, old Zara pants that no longer fit, a denim shirt that I had for like 10 years and wore to death, and some other stuff. Yay. by @jeffmasters1

….in my reupholstery era. I thrifted this chair last weekend and recovered it with denim scraps that I had (leopard print denim, who knew). I kinda like the back better but um yeah that’s life I guess.

You can swipe to see what the chair originally looked like and also a pic of me demonstrating that it’s a functional pocket.

Now please excuse me while I go reupholster my entire couch just kidding but maybe not?? by @jeffmasters1

32 states in the U.S. have laws on the books targeting people living with HIV. They look like different things depending on where you live, but the throughline is the same: they criminalize people, not for causing harm, but for their HIV status.

Robert Suttle joins us on @lgbtqpod to talk about his experience with Louisiana’s HIV criminalization laws. And here’s a stat I found particularly jarring (more on this in the interview):

A 2022 study from the Williams Institute found that nearly two-thirds of the people on Louisiana’s sex offender registry were there SOLELY due to HIV-related convictions. The vast majority of which were also LGBTQ+ and/or people of color.

I’d love it if you’d listen. Let me know what you think.

“I’m at an age when writers are supposed to say finally what mattered most to them—for me, it would be thousands of sex partners.”

I had the great pleasure of getting to talk with the great Edmund White for @lgbtqpod.

By his estimate, he’s had sex with over 3,000 people, the most meaningful of which are documented in his new book, The Loves of My Life: A Sex Memoir.

Having written over 30 books, including A Boy’s Own Story and The Joy of Gay Sex (co-written with Charles Silverstein), he’s among a small group of gay writers in the 70s and 80s that forced the world to take LGBTQ+ stories seriously. 🏳️‍🌈

…I think this goes without saying, but this episode is perhaps one of our most x-rated.

Let me know what you think. I loved this conversation and think you will too. by @jeffmasters1

New @lgbtqpod with the one and only Bob Mackie. 🥰

Bob has spent the last 60+ years crafting the visual identity for some of the greatest entertainers who’ve ever lived. He designed the nude dress that Marilyn Monroe infamously wore while singing “Happy Birthday, Mr. President” to JFK.

He created the famous curtain dress that Carol Burnett wore in The Carol Burnett Show’s spoof of Gone With the Wind.

And he and Cher have been collaborating on costumes since she was 19. He worked with her on The Sonny and Cher Show, multiple tours and music videos, and still designs for her today.

His new documentary “Bob Mackie: Naked Illusion” is now streaming on Prime Video.
