Showa SF @showa_sf is such an incredible dining experience - a set kaiseki meal focused on a variety of katsu (pork and fish) with over a dozen dishes including crab tartare and somen noodles. From the initial appetizers hidden in a special box to the watermelon shaved ice dessert with fresh mochi, every course was excellent. The meal was definitely worth the $150 price. Make reservations early!

Turn any photo into a custom wall hanging! 🧶✨I tried rug tufting for the first time at TuTugether @tutugether.ca at Westfield Valley Fair, and it was such a great experience. I originally thought you had to choose from a preset menu of designs, but you can literally use ANY picture (I purposely chose one without too much detail so it wouldn’t be too hard!). They project your image onto the canvas so you can trace it.

Huge shoutout to our helper Sam, who was super patient and taught us how to use the tufting gun (you get to practice beforehand on a different canvas).

Picking from their huge wall of yarn colors was fun and doing the rug tufting felt very zen. There were a bunch of couples, friend groups, and parent/kids tufting together. After I was finished, they helped me fix a few spots and then I wandered the mall for 20 minutes while they cut it to a square (they can cut any custom shape) and added the backing. I can’t wait to hang it on my wall!

@tutugether.ca also does fluid paint bear art and decoden custom phone cases & frames, and sell a bunch of cute blind boxes!

If you love matcha, check out the new matcha cake at @noevalleybakery! It’s a vanilla chiffon cake w/a light matcha flavor and the yuzu citrus-flavored Bavarian cream in between the layers. I also love their new Blueberry Meyer Lemon Croissant Twist, so buttery and filled with just the right amount of lemon pastry cream topped w/fresh blueberries.

Also swipe to see the dark chocolate birthday cake my team gave me from @noevalleybakery for my bday over the summer!

After Japan, we ended our trip with 4 days in Seoul, Korea for good food, cafes, shopping, and fun wellness/beauty stuff.

*Starfield Library in COEX mall
*Jogyesa Temple lantern garden
*Favorite Ikseon Italian/Korean restaurant
*Banana Waffle & Oreo Bingsoo at *POEM Cafe
*Pokpo Cafe w/man-made waterfall! Hiked Ansan mountain next door
*Arirang restaurant (Michelin bib gourmand)
*Cheongsudong Bakery cafe - the most beautiful cafe we saw; Chestnut Glacée Mont Blanc dessert
*Teddy bear themed Dalim Bread cafe in Seoungsu
*Heart popsicle in Insadong, filled w/cute arts & crafts stores
*Salt bread & watermelon juice at *Soha Salt Bread Cafe (popular cafe but bread is ok)
*The viral Glutinous Donut Twist (kkwabaegi) at Gwangjang Market Chapssal Kkwabaegi was SO good
*Jap chae noodles from Myeongdong night market
*Cafe Dasique above the Dasique K-beauty store
*Jayeondo - the actual BEST salt bread in Seoul
*Strawberry lemonade from 943 King’s Cross, an unofficial overpriced Harry Potter themed cafe
*Onion Cafe in Seoungsu - popular on instagram but we weren’t into the post-apocalyptic/fallout shelter vibe

Friends said we might buy an extra suitcase for clothes but we actually got one just for Olive Young purchases because the Seongsu store did free skin analyses and then walked us around to show us all the skincare products they recommended. We also got massages, color analysis(just for fun, not that helpful) and I even decided to get a perm on the last night.

Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea were our first stops in Japan and they lived up to all the hype! 🏰

🎢 I had no idea there were so many rides unique to Tokyo. 🇯🇵 I thought Journey to the Center of the Earth was as good (if not better than) Rise of the Resistance. Beauty and the Beast, Tangled’s Lantern Festival, and 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (different from the original) were all incredible. It was also fun spotting Disney characters like Moana inside It’s a Small World and playing flashlight tag on the Monsters Inc ride.

👻 I also loved how obsessed everyone here is with Baymax; he’s the star in the parade and almost everyone was wearing his headband.

🍿 Everyone also had Disney popcorn buckets, so we got the Winnie the Pooh one (complete with the mini popcorn tongs my husband insisted on buying)-the curry popcorn was surprisingly good! We had a great fine dining experience Magellan’s explorer-thrmed restaurant.

🏝️ We booked the vacation package and it was totally worth it w/the early entry, extra fast passes, and hotel breakfast. The unlimited park drinks 🍹 turned out to be a highlight with the heat and getting to skip the food lines let us check out so many different restaurants.

🏨 We stayed at the Fantasy Springs Hotel where they gave us fresh PJs every night & had an amazing breakfast w/Japanese & American food (swipe to see the carts for your buffet tray!).

Nara is famous for mochi pounding and deer, but it was kinda “Instagram vs. reality” for me..

🦌 Deer Feeding: I love that the deer bow after you feed them, but soon after another one came and bit my stomach, then another stabbed my arm with its antler 😳 I read later you’re supposed to raise your hands to show you’re out of food. I retreated to the Starbucks across the street ☕️

🍡 Mochi Pounding: we arrived at the Nakatanidou shop at 11 but the shop’s sign said mochi pounding was at 1pm (I assumed it was throughout the day..) but when I arrived 12:40 they were starting but luckily I got to see it, even if it was behind closed glass doors. The guy punching the fresh mochi at the end was pretty cool 😎

We found great matcha lattes at Nara Matcha and it was an easy train stop between Kyoto and Osaka with a cute shopping arcade. I still recommend going but if you want friendlier deer, walk into the park further (we just fed the first ones we saw since it was 96 degrees and didn’t feel like walking any further)

A highlight of our Japan trip was playing the game Konpira Fune Fune with a Maiko! This rhythm game, where you change your hand to a fist if your opponent takes the box, is traditionally played by geisha at their engagements.

Maiko are apprentice geiko (what geisha are called in Kyoto) and have intricate hairstyles (using their real hair, until they wear wigs as geiko), colorful kimono, and distinct makeup. Since geisha sightings on the street are so rare nowadays (they mostly take taxis), booking this experience was a great way to meet one. We watched her perform a dance, asked her questions, played games, and had tea and dessert.

We spent 3 days in Kyoto, starting with the incredible illuminated bamboo forest at Kodai-ji Temple. It was just a 15-minute walk from Ryokan Shiraume, where we spent our first night sleeping on comfy futons w/our own private onsen bath and traditional Japanese dinner & breakfast served in our room.

Our food highlights were:
-Hikiniku to Come @hikiniku.to.come for fresh Japanese burger patties grilled right in front of us, and
-Gion Duck Noodles @gion_duck_noodles for amazing ramen
-Chao Chao Gyoza was on my list from social media, and while it was good
cheap eats, it prob wasn’t worth waiting 15 minutes in 95-degree heat 🥟

We loved browsing all the little shops, esp the Miffy Kitchen store, and were thrilled to find Marukyu Koyamaen matcha powder at Takashimaya for a fraction of the U.S. price (1 per person limit but we each for one & went two days in a row) 🍵

As a longtime fan of @piccinosf in the Dogpatch, I was excited to check out their new location @piccinopresidio right by the Yoda statue at the Lucasfilm building in the Presidio. We originally booked an outdoor table, but thankfully due to the cold they were able to seat us inside (though the patio with heaters did look lovely). Our favorites were the Kampachi Crudo (raw yellowtail fish) with sliced plums, the Pork & Beef Polpette meatballs in a tomato sauce, and a fantastic Tortellini w/sweet corn, ricotta, and morel mushrooms. The Bucatini Pomodoro pasta was a tad bit more al dente than I like, the pizzas were grea-we actually preferred the funghi over the prosciutto.
