575 Wandsworth Road is a terraced home that, from the street level you would walk by without a second glance but contains a rich, personal inner world. Khadambi Asalache was an architect, poet, philosopher, civil servant and novelist who for 20 to 25 years hand carved fretwork throughout his modest Georgian home. The fretwork originally came about - so it is told - as an attempt to cover up stains from persistent dampness that was coming through his walls due to the laundromat next door. In the end he covered the whole home - toe to tip! The fretwork is familiar, jagged and lacks symmetry (i.e. most would have mirrored patterns on either side of the hallway but instead the two sides are asymmetrical). Due to his background and interests, the motifs pull from African, Islamic and British motifs - he called it an exercise of horror vacui (fear of emptiness).

Looking at these photos almost makes me want to cry - this project has cropped up at a time where I have been thinking heavily on who does and does not get ‘good’ design, imperfection, futility, immigration and the idea that “a project can save you”.

I am excited to look into Khadambi’s poetry.

As for me, this is a photo taken of me at a vintage show in LA. I have worn this lace set in a photo before - it was a set I had originally bought for myself for my 30th birthday but did not wear. I have also worn this sheer dress over the set before - it is a Miista set I bought for myself that reminds me of a woman I met in Barcelona who I saw wearing it once, and I can only hope I soak up a fraction of the elegance she had. by @jenameeks

Maurice Medcalfe’s “Bathing Pillar,” not only do I love that this referred to as a pillar but that this is dedicated entirely to leisure. The basement is a dining space, the ground floor is a dedicated living room, the next two floors have a Japanese bath and Finnish Sauna - and atop the 35’ tower is a roof deck for sun bathing. The windows are made of plastic and are an element the architect used again in a project called “bubble house” - I am very onto the cushion bubbly specs on a redwood facade here. It’s a humorous little tower in the woody hills.

For me - summer is over! But when it was high summer I kept this quilted bra from Cult Form in rotation. Quilting in summer only works if ya got your whole belly out to sunbathe. by @jenameeks

Les Caryatides situates itself ever so perfectly between the streets Andrea Palladio and Frank Lloyd Wright and is a 110 unit housing project held up by 18 Venuses. The caryatids were modeled after Venus of Milo (likely depicting Aphrodite) in various positions and heights - one in particular I like is a Venus that appears to have her head embedded in her hip (it may actually be more than one Venus that has this condition but it’s difficult for me to tell). The project is designed by Manuel Núñez Yanowsky (obvi a postmodernist) in 1992 - I find this piece strangely sleek and wildly humorous and bizarre.

As for me - I’m currently sick as a dog and I look forward to my days back out in the sunshine eating seasonal fruits again in my cowboy boots and vintage bolero ties. by @jenameeks

A semi attached home with a seemingly semi attached fireplace that rotates on at axis from the interior out to the garden (that is also wonderfully encapsulated by a semi circle). Cesare Leonardi who designed this renovation at Casa Mescoli-Goich was an advocate of implementing his craftiness and hands on approach to design and was able to scheme up fantastic elements like this fireplace that rotates with a truck’s fifth wheel coupling - typically used to link up a tow truck and trailer. This project is wonderfully playful and has a soul of summer.

I myself - have totally committed to summer so much so I sewed up a quick little tube top because I could not be bother to be indoors long enough to shop for one. A seam certainly popped at one point because I also could not be bothered to locate the appropriate thread either - not in this heat ! by @jenameeks

The boiler room or Hot House (1915) by Rudolf Steiner is an investigation of making what is typically utilitarian in its composition into something completely fanciful and expressive - a Gesamtkunstwerk! The structure is a boiler room for another building inside a complex designed by Steiner (more on that another day). The chimney is a sculptural plume of smoke - it lies somewhere between Brutalism, Expressionism, Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau. The whole thing is just as radical and eccentric as Steiner was.

As for me - it’s summer, which means it’s time to dock up on the beach and wear bicorn hats. Bring back the bicorn!!! Invite me to your summer parties and let me wear my fanciful hats as well. by @jenameeks

This felt like an obvious pairing - and though Luis Barragan’s Cuadra San Cristobal is easily recognizable to even those tangential to design - I never tire of it. Built between 1967 - 1968 this equestrian and private complex is a haven for horses. One of its most recognizable elements, the water feature, serves as the drinking fountain and swimming pool for horses and a reflection pond. The project is simple and rather utilitarian but its scale, geometry and color come together as serene and exquisite. It almost feels like the walls are constructed from pure color pigment - delicious and poetic.

As for me - I got this roper top from a little vintage shop in Houston that was filled to the brim with 70s prairie dresses. taken in Cuadra San Cristobal - Luis Barragán by @jenameeks

Alberto Ponis had a really compelling method of figuring out his building plans. He would map out the plan by physically walking about and laying it out around the geography of the site. He was against moving or demolishing any trees or large boulders on the site so he would end up working around them or they would become part of the interior. This is how he ends up with plans like this one at Casa Gostner in a hexagonal U-shape. It makes for an enclosed private intimate space that is airy and full of light.

This fit is what I wear when I don’t really know what to wear - you can wear any base but put on this finely constructed Miista dress and viola!

The Anahuacalli Museum is a bizarre space that feels at once like it has been there for centuries but it is still wildly modern and fresh. All the murals were done by Diego Rivera - who also designed it. The whole facade is constructed from volcanic rock - which is goth has hell. I love the details taken from Teotihuacan structures.
There has since been an extension to the museum and though originally Diego imagined additional structures in the sprawling land around the project to resemble an archeological site — I think it was done with sensitivity to the intent of original structure.

As for me - clearly it’s Halloween all year and I have no qualms with running around looking like a Brassaï deviant in the middle of spring . by @jenameeks

A FAVE. This is the rebuild of the fire damaged Teatro Regio (‘Royal Theatre’) by Carlo Mollino. He had a knack for developing depth using varied volumes, textures, colors, surfaces - etc. He typically opted for complexity over simplicity but I think his control of curvature and textures here is incredibly elegant. The lights, the theater chairs - oof - a luxurious treat.

I also want to thank @theodosias_inferno for creating luxurious shoes for this peasant here! Working with them was such a treat ! I’ll have to post detailed pics of the shoes - I love poulaines but I just couldn’t get the thought of some horned shoes out of my head and I am thrilled with the outcome. by @jenameeks

This is the Featherson House by Robert Boyd (1969). The prompt for the house given by the original clients was a shed like house in a garden. This house is so lovely - like living in a greenhouse. The area beneath the platforms where the fish pond is, is actually the earth - the house is not built on a slab.
Some of these photos are showing the more recent renovation of the space including a ledge where the current owners keep furniture they love (but are not currently using) or pieces that need repair.

As for me, I repaired these leather boots I got for $5 bucks at a council shop. Don’t knock a bit of sprucing required to get a real find! by @jenameeks

The gate (and some details) at the Woodland Chapel by Erik Gunnar Asplund. This whole project is a gem but for now let’s appreciate these wonderfully macabre details. Delicate and spooky - with elements like the skull peephole, opening up for death, if you will….The whole chapel has symbolic references throughout.

As for me - I got this bag from a shop in Barcelona last year and I am still obsessed with it . by @jenameeks

This is a lil tea house by Terunobu Fujimori I believe.

The hut on stilts was built in a very short amount of time so the owner of the tea house dubbed it the One Night Hut after the legend of Japanese general, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who built a fort in a single night.

Spider webs became a part of the outfit here. by @jenameeks
