Yesterday the firm I started 11 years ago was announced as the recipient of the Smithsonian National Design Award for our work in Interior Design! The award is given to a firm for their “innovative contributions to interior environments that advance the understanding of our spatial experiences.” Past recipients include many of my heroes, people and firms that have shaped my own education and practice in very meaningful ways.

Bravo to the CHH team over the years - a hardcore, hardworking and highly creative group of Individuals that have dreamed of so many amazing spaces and made them realities. And thank you to our visionary and trusting clients and collaborators who have invited us to work on their projects! I have so many more feelings in this moment than I can really express here but I am deeply moved and tremendously grateful and proud of @ch_herrero ❤️

Today, CHH was announced as the recipient of the Smithsonian National Design Award for our work in Interior Design. This award is given to a firm for their innovative contributions to interior environments that advance the understanding of our spatial experiences and will be presented at the Smithsonian National Design Awards Gala in May. Launched in 2000 by the Cooper Hewitt as an official project of the White House Millennium Council, the award and its associated public programs seek to increase national awareness of the impact of design in our everyday life. Prior recipients include many of our heroes, people and firms that have shaped our own education and practice in meaningful ways. We are humbled by this honor and it has affirmed our commitment to this work, our field, and our community.

Thank you to the jury of our peers. And thank you to the many people who are a part of the projects that constitute this  achievement - the clients and collaborators, builders, artisans, artists, weavers, upholsterers, lighting designers, antique dealers, photographers, graphic designers, florists, landscape designers, carpenters, painters. And bravo to the CHH team over the years - a hardcore, hardworking and highly creative group of individuals that have dreamed up so many amazing spaces and made them realities! @cooperhewitt #NationalDesignAwards

CHH’s proposal for a performing arts center on Melrose Hill - a love letter to LA, drawing from the unique theatrical landscape of the city’s billboards and sunsets 🧡 The transparent fly tower extends the theater to the street, allowing passersby to see hanging sets and props, and daylight to enter for rehearsals or experimental performances. Its glassy volume borrows its structural sensibilities from the LA Case Study Program.

Architectural forms in tandem with landscape elements create opportunities for informal performance, with a sculpted rooftop lawn and amphitheater framing views of the city and the LA sky at sunset.
