some staples in my viet household i had growing up! people always talk about wandering target and buying things you didn't need to, but my target will always be the viet supermarket a few streets down.

swipe right for what was going on in my head while drawing each item! learning a bit about me and the food i grew up loving. ٩(^ᗜ^ )و ´-

i believe hope to be smth created and passed down. every lantern in the sky being a dream my ancestors once carried, ones that may have never been fully realized. i am only able to have my own because of theirs, and every step i take is in honor of the ones they were never able to take. let their glow be both a celebration and a promise that their sacrifices were not in vain, and that thru me, their dreams may still take flight.

i'm so happy to be able to finally incorporate the lạc bird into one of my pieces!! not just as a reminder and pride of my viet roots, but to honor pre-colonial vietnam and pre-colonialism in general.

so so much thanks to @goldenguideorg for an amazing opportunity to participate in their hiraya manawari ("reach your dreams") group show and kicking off aapi heritage month so good‼️

work for the cryptid zine i did last yr!!! been busy with nda stuff that i can't share quite yet, but have an oldie!

i grew up very obsessed with folklore (all my book reports were on them during primary school lol) and working on this rly wants me to get back into it. forgot how much i loved learning about folklore from all around.

this is a snow wasset from canada and the great lakes. they're sauuuur coot and loved how they blend into the snow so easily when capturing prey from below. modeled mine after ermines, which are also found in the snow! (-:

hope my east coasters are staying safe n warm!!!

a companion piece to my grocery list one, i give you the viet supermarket that viet san diegans know very well: vien dong‼️

specifically wanted to highlight their fresh produce section since that's where my family would start our grocery runs then fish n meats, and then my parents would soon lose my sisters n me to the snack aisle.

its first location opened in linda vista in 1981 as vien dong 1 supermarket and soon moved to other areas in sd. it's always heartwarming to find older asian supermarkets wherever i go, but this one is truly my home away from home!

i also wanted to pay homage to pixel (game) art. it's what i started off doing at 11yo when i was figuring out digital art, and so many vien dong snacks kept me fed while up drawing until 3am.
