🌀Shoutout to everyone who came thru to the closing reception of ‘FLOURISH & FLOW,’ especially those that came from far, wide and in between! Our mission at PINAYSPHERE is to amplify Pina/xy voices as well as our AANHPI creatives. We want to help hold up the mirror that reminds you of your ancestors, your heritage and your lineage letting you know how important it is that you remember. Or perhaps you see your story in someone else’s expression allowing a small spark of inspiration that promotes action to plant, water, flourish & flow — creating a ripple that’ll then create waves. Art is our life line, it fuels us. One of the highlights of the evening was chatting with CEO of County of Ventura, Dr. Sevet Johnson (WE SEE YOU BIPOC QUEEN! YES!) who said, “I feel so connected to the theme and it reminds me of my own experience traveling between lands. I think it’s absolutely brilliant!” If you didn’t get to catch ‘FLOURISH & FLOW’ this time around, it’ll be traveling to Santa Barbara County this August! Sign up for our newsletter to keep updated! Thanks again to PINAYSPHERE’s curatorial team @hrh.tori @mangobatoon for all of your hard work and to David Yoshimoto, @vcartscouncil & @countyofventura for providing the funding to make it all happen ✨

Our mission at PINAYSPHERE is to amplify Pina/xy voices as well as our AANHPI creatives. We want to be intentional about holding up the mirror that reminds you of your ancestors, your heritage and your lineage that reminds you of how important your stories are. To remember why roots, lineages, ancestors matter. Or perhaps you see your story in someone else’s artistic expression allowing a small spark of inspiration. One that promotes action to plant, water, flourish & flow — creating a ripple that’ll then create waves. Art is our life line, it fuels us. One of the highlights of the evening was chatting with CEO, County of Ventura, Dr. Sevet Johnson (young colored woman! YES!) who said, “I feel so connected to the theme and it reminds me of my own experience traveling between lands. “This overwhelming message of whiter being better isn’t just confined to mainstream media. It’s steeped in everyday life – it’s banal. As a society, we’ve normalised judging someone by their skin tone, from fellow classmates to the most prominent public figures.” Jen Laforteza (@jen_laforteza) dissects colourism in the Philippines and how it has affected Filipino people, women in particular, starting from Spanish, American, and Japanese colonial oppression, and continuing to this day with skin-lightening beauty advertisements, pageants that favour lighter-skinned contestants, and societal ridicule of people with darker skin tones.
